British experts have identified the best cars for travel. The list includes both budget models and modern electric and hybrid vehicles. Find out which cars offer the best balance of comfort, fuel efficiency, and practicality
British experts have compiled a ranking of the best cars for travel, which has surprised even experienced drivers. The list includes both compact budget models and modern electric cars and hybrids with long ranges. This is reported by the Daily Express.
1. Kia Picanto – the unexpected leader of the ranking
First place went to the Kia Picanto – a compact city car not typically associated with long-distance travel. However, British experts named it the best option for road trips, particularly due to its fuel efficiency, maneuverability, and ease of daily use. According to the RAC, the Picanto can offer more driving pleasure than significantly more expensive and powerful cars.
This model is particularly well-suited for routes with narrow roads, small towns, and frequent stops. The Picanto handles easily on winding roads and poses no parking problems in tourist towns. This is important in Europe, where space is often limited in old city centers and large cars can be inconvenient.
Key advantages of the Kia Picanto for travel:
1. Fuel consumption is approximately 5–6 liters per 100 km;
2. Its compact size makes it easier to navigate narrow roads;
3. The car is easy to park in small towns;
4. The model is more affordable compared to larger cars;
5. In Ukraine, a new Kia Picanto costs around 900,000 UAH, while a used one can be found for $5,000–8,000.
For budget travel, the Picanto seems like a particularly logical choice. It doesn’t offer a large trunk or premium space, but it allows you to save on fuel, makes it easier to get around in cities, and reduces parking worries.

2. Mercedes-Benz CLA – an electric car for long-distance trips
Second place went to the electric version of the Mercedes-Benz CLA. It was recognized as the best electric car for travel thanks to its long range and fast charging. For electric cars, this is one of the key factors, as during long trips, it’s important for the driver not to have to plan their route around every charging station.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA has a range of about 750 km on a single charge. This makes the model convenient for intercity and international travel, especially in countries with a well-developed network of charging stations. At the same time, fast charging reduces the time spent stopping along the way, which is important for those traveling long distances.
What makes the Mercedes-Benz CLA a strong choice for travel:
1. A range of about 750 km on a single charge;
2. Fast charging during long trips;
3. A high level of comfort for the driver and passengers;
4. Modern driver-assistance technologies;
5. No costs for gasoline or diesel fuel.
The CLA is better suited not for budget travel, but for those seeking a comfortable electric vehicle with a long range. This option will be most convenient for trips in countries where the charging infrastructure is well-developed and routes can be planned without unnecessary stress.
3. Nissan Qashqai e-Power – a practical choice for family trips
Third place went to the Nissan Qashqai e-Power – a hybrid crossover that stands out for its balance of fuel efficiency, comfort, and practicality. Unlike the compact Kia Picanto, this model is better suited for family trips or journeys with a lot of luggage. It is precisely this spaciousness that became one of the Qashqai’s main advantages in the ranking.
The Nissan Qashqai e-Power’s trunk capacity is 504 liters. For comparison, the Kia Picanto’s capacity is 255 liters, and the Mercedes-Benz CLA’s is 407 liters. In other words, the Nissan offers more space for suitcases, children’s items, sports equipment, or shopping during a trip.
Key advantages of the Nissan Qashqai e-Power:
1. Trunk capacity – 504 liters;
2. Fuel consumption – approximately 4.5–5.2 L per 100 km;
3. More space for passengers and luggage;
4. Convenience for family trips;
5. Combination of electric power and a gasoline engine.
Another strong point of the model is its fuel efficiency. In terms of fuel consumption, the Qashqai e-Power even outperforms the Kia Picanto: while the Picanto’s figure can be 5–6 liters per 100 km, the Nissan’s is approximately 4.5–5.2 liters. Therefore, this model seems like a good choice for those who need not just a car for the road, but a versatile option for long trips with the family.
