The market for bottled gas equipment (GBO) in Ukraine at the beginning of 2026 demonstrates a clear trend reversal. What a year ago looked like an obvious way to save on fuel, today increasingly raises doubts among drivers.

March data confirm: demand is still holding, but more due to inertia than due to real benefits.

Experts from the Institute for Research on the Auto Market and Finance.ua investigated why demand for GBO is falling and whether it is profitable to install gas on cars, and we will tell you about the results in this article.

Why is the popularity of GBO falling?

At the end of 2025, autogas remained a key tool for saving. In the period from November to January, its cost fluctuated within 34-38 UAH per liter - this was enough to massively install GBO.

However, already in the spring of 2026, the cost of fuel has changed significantly:

- March 2026 – about 43 UAH/l;

- April 2026 – almost 49-50 UAH/l.

Against the background of the cost of A-95 gasoline (~74 UAH/l), the difference no longer looks so convincing. Especially if you take into account the technical nuances of HBO:

1. Gas consumption is 15–20% higher.

2. The engine still consumes gasoline when starting.

3. Additional maintenance costs.

As a result, the savings that were previously the main argument are gradually leveling off.

Why did the number of installed HBOs increase sharply in March?

According to analysts, in March 2026, 1,060 HBO installations were recorded - this is significantly more than in February - 631. However, this jump has a completely logical explanation - drivers tried to "catch up" to install gas as a result of another increase in the price of gasoline.

If you look at the dynamics more broadly, the situation looks different. The peak of HBO installation in 2025 fell on July, when 1,284 installations were ordered, then there was a gradual decrease in the fall and a sharp decline in February 2026, followed by a short-term recovery in March.

Given the further increase in prices, the second quarter of 2026 may be a period of sharp market decline.

What cars do Ukrainians most often switch to gas?

Despite the change in the economy, the structure of the car fleet has hardly changed. The leaders remain models with traditionally high fuel consumption, among the most popular:

- Skoda Octavia

- Nissan Rogue

- Mitsubishi Outlander

- Toyota Camry

- Jeep Cherokee

- Daewoo Lanos

- Volkswagen Passat

- Volkswagen Golf

- Dodge Journey

It is interesting that the average age of a car is about 16 years, which means that today's HBO is not about innovation, but about the survival of the old fleet.

Demand groups for HBO

In general, the market for cars on which Ukrainians install HBO in 2026 can be clearly divided into two categories:

1. American crossovers and SUVs

The reason is large engines, high fuel consumption, among them: Nissan Rogue, Jeep Compass, Dodge Journey.

2. European "classics"

Simple and reliable engines, but a respectable age of transport: Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Golf, Daewoo Lanos.

In the first case, gas is a way to reduce costs, in the second - simply an opportunity to extend the life of the car, because these brands are representatives of the segment with simple engines that are structurally well adapted to operate on gas, but due to their age, they need to minimize operating costs.

What are the prospects for the LPG market in Ukraine?

Analysts agree on one thing - with a gas price of 49–50 UAH/l, the economic logic of installing LPG practically disappears, so the following market development scenarios are possible in the coming months:

- A sharp reduction in installations;

- Maintaining demand only among commercial vehicles;

- Focus on cars with a large engine capacity.

In other words, the mass LPG market may return to a narrow niche.

When fuel costs become less predictable, drivers are increasingly thinking not only about saving, but also about protecting their car. This is where car insurance “Basic Kasko” on Visit Ukraine becomes the optimal solution - an insurance format that combines affordability and practical benefits.

This product allows you to get basic coverage for the most common risks without overpaying for a full CASCO package. You can choose one of three levels of protection - from minimal accident coverage to an extended option with war risks and car evacuation.

What is especially relevant is that the policy is suitable for both Ukrainian drivers and foreigners who are in Ukraine in their own car. Registration is available online and takes a minimum of time - without bureaucracy and unnecessary steps.

In a situation where the market is changing and risks are increasing, it is important to have at least basic financial protection. Apply for MiniKASKO now and be sure of the safety of your car under any circumstances!

Reminder! In Ukraine, they plan to introduce mandatory technical inspection for all cars by 2027. Read here why this is necessary, how the new inspection system will work and what will change for drivers.

Frequantly
asked questions
Does it make sense to install HBO in 2026?
It all depends on the type of car and mileage. For cars with a large engine and high monthly mileage, this may still be justified. But for the average driver, the savings are already much less than before.
How quickly does the installation of LPG pay for itself now?
Does LPG affect the engine's resource?
