How Ukrainians' Consumer Behavior Has Changed During the War: New Spending Patterns and Choices
Ukrainians' consumer behavior is changing under the influence of the war and economic factors. Find out how Ukrainians spend their money, what consumption patterns exist, and what influences their choice of products
In the fifth year of full-scale war in Ukraine, consumer behavior has undergone a noticeable transformation. Some Ukrainians have begun to approach spending more rationally and cautiously, while others are trying to maintain their usual lifestyle despite the difficult circumstances. This is evidenced by the results of a study conducted by Gradus.
Four Models of Ukrainian Consumer Behavior
Analysts have identified four key consumer groups that demonstrate different approaches to spending:
1. Strategic savers (21%). This group focuses on saving and long-term planning. People carefully monitor their budget, set aside funds, and build reserves “for the future,” striving to minimize risks.
2. Impulsive Hedonists (23%). For these consumers, emotions and “here and now” satisfaction are important. They don’t put off living for later and may spend money spontaneously, guided by their own feelings.
3. Rational Optimizers (27%). This is the most balanced group. They control their spending but do not radically change their lifestyle. Their approach is optimization, not strict frugality.
4. Free-spending consumers (29%). The largest share of respondents is not inclined to limit their spending. They strive to maintain their usual level of consumption despite economic and social challenges.

What influences product choices?
Despite different behavioral patterns, most Ukrainians have developed common priorities when choosing products.
Price and value-for-money offers come first. Discounts, promotions, and the opportunity to save remain key decision-making factors.
The second priority is convenience and time-saving. Consumers are increasingly choosing services and brands that simplify the purchasing and interaction process.
At the same time, the importance of the emotional component is growing. Ukrainians expect honest communication, empathy, and social responsibility from businesses, which is becoming a key factor in loyalty.
How is the war changing spending habits?
The study’s findings show that Ukrainian society does not follow a single behavioral pattern. Some adapt through frugality and planning, while others do so by maintaining familiar lifestyles as a means of psychological stabilization.
These changes affect not only the market but also how businesses approach customers—from pricing strategies to audience communication.
In this context, interest in socially responsible consumption is also growing. For example, by purchasing patriotic merchandise on Visit Ukraine, users not only acquire symbolic items but also contribute to supporting the country, as a portion of the proceeds from sales goes toward aid for Ukraine.
Ukrainians’ consumer behavior during the war has become more diverse and flexible. It combines rationality, emotionality, and a desire for stability. For businesses, this is a signal: it is important not only to offer competitive prices but also to build trust and meet society’s new expectations.
We remind you! Ukraine has begun systematic preparations for the resumption of civil aviation following the reopening of its airspace. Read about who is part of the working group, which airports are already involved, and how they are preparing for the phased resumption of flights.
