Vision Requirements for Drivers in Ukraine: What Codes Are on the License and What Should You Keep in Mind?
Ukraine has clear vision requirements for drivers when obtaining a license. Find out which codes indicate vision correction, when you need to update your information, and how this affects driving safety
Vision is one of the key factors in road safety, which is why this aspect is checked particularly carefully when obtaining or renewing a driver’s license in Ukraine. As reported by the Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, information regarding the need for vision correction is recorded not only in the medical certificate but also directly on the driver’s license in the form of special codes.

Which codes indicate the need for vision correction?
If the medical certificate confirms that the driver must operate a vehicle using vision correction aids, code 01 appears on the license. It is specified depending on the method of correction:
● 01.01 — the driver must drive while wearing glasses;
● 01.02 — driving with contact lenses is permitted;
● 01.06 — both glasses and contact lenses are permitted.
These codes define mandatory driving requirements, and failure to comply with them may affect both the driver’s safety and legal liability.
If the medical certificate states that the driver must wear glasses, it is recommended to have the photo for the license taken while wearing them. This helps avoid misunderstandings during inspections and confirms that the driver is complying with the established requirements.

Renewing your driver’s license: when should you update your vision information?
Special attention should be paid to vision requirements when renewing your license, especially when replacing a temporary document (issued for 2 years) with a permanent one.
Although a medical certificate is not required for renewal during martial law, it should be provided if there have been changes in your health status. This will allow for up-to-date information to be entered into the license and help avoid inaccuracies. A medical certificate is the only valid basis for correctly updating this information.
By the way, drivers should also ensure their financial security on the road. For example, purchasing car insurance "Basiс Kasko" on Visit Ukraine will help cover unforeseen expenses in case of car damage—especially relevant in conditions of heavy traffic and increased risks.
