Summer holidays in Europe are traditionally associated with huge crowds, high prices and overcrowded attractions. Due to the negative effects of overtourism, many travellers try to avoid European capitals during the peak season. However, there are still plenty of wonderful places on the continent where you can enjoy a relaxing break away from the hustle and bustle. The authoritative travel magazine National Geographic has named eight stunning yet underrated European cities that are ideal for a holiday this summer.

Holidays in Europe without the crowds: alternative routes in France, Italy and Spain

Experts point out that for a comfortable holiday far from the crowds, it is not necessary to choose places with underdeveloped tourist infrastructure in the backwaters of the continent. Hidden tourist gems can be found even in countries traditionally favoured by holidaymakers, such as France and Italy.

According to the authors of the selection, steering clear of the obvious destinations opens up a whole new range of options for city breaks. As National Geographic points out, in northern Spain, the inland regions of France or in turbulent Georgia, summer city breaks are accompanied by relaxation by the sea, on sandy beaches and walks in green spaces — all without the queues. Summer city tourism is taking on a new meaning thanks to affordable restaurants in courtyards, evening bars, local festivals and a wave of new discoveries.

Top underrated European cities: a ranking of the best holiday destinations

The list of destinations worth visiting in the summer of 2026 includes eight cities offering a high standard of service, a rich history and a unique cultural experience with minimal tourist crowds.

Among the countries of Western and Southern Europe, experts highlight the French city of Toulouse, which offers an authentic holiday in the country’s inland regions, as well as the Italian city of Trieste — a port city with a unique blend of cultures, free from the hustle and bustle of classic resorts. In northern Spain, Bilbao is a wonderful alternative to the overcrowded beaches, whilst in Portugal, tourists are advised to check out Ponta Delgada.

Central and Eastern Europe and the Caucasus region also have their own favourites. The magazine strongly recommends visiting the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. For lovers of the cool Baltic coast and rich architecture, the Polish city of Gdańsk is ideal, whilst those seeking green and eco-friendly locations should head to Ljubljana in Slovenia. Also making the list is Cork in Ireland, which offers a classic island atmosphere far from the bustling tourist crowds of Dublin.
