In 2026, the international Happy City Index once again proves that a city’s sense of happiness is shaped not by postcards, but by the quality of everyday life. The study focuses on comfort, safety, the environment, and the work-life balance.

Where do the happiest people live in 2026?

Copenhagen topped the ranking. Following it in the top ten are Helsinki, Geneva, Uppsala, Tokyo, Trondheim, Bern, Malmö, Munich, and Aarhus.

The researchers emphasize that most of these cities are not megacities but medium-sized urban areas where infrastructure functions reliably and life does not turn into a daily struggle against the system.

The second ten includes Zurich, Barcelona, Espoo, Oslo, The Hague, as well as less obvious destinations — Ballarat, Aalborg, Yokohama, Lugano, and Reykjavik.

At the same time, popular tourist capitals ranked significantly lower: Paris — 25th place, Stockholm — 28th, Warsaw — 32nd, Vienna — 33rd, Berlin — 36th, and Amsterdam — only 43rd.

Even lower positions are held by London (48th place), Prague (72nd), Brussels (78th), and Milan (80th).

Among the bottom-ranked cities are New York (207) and Istanbul (206). Kyiv is listed in 251st place without a specific ranking—as a mark of respect for a city operating under wartime conditions.

What does the Happy City Index evaluate?

The ranking is based on 64 indicators that directly impact quality of life, including:

● transportation and mobility;

● environment and air quality;

● access to healthcare;

● safety;

● digital services;

● work-life balance;

● housing affordability;

● quality of city governance.

It is the combination of these factors that shapes so-called “urban happiness.”

Yes, popular cities like Paris or London remain a magnet for tourists, but in everyday life they often fall short due to congested transportation, high housing costs, and constant noise. This creates background stress that significantly affects residents’ overall well-being.

The main conclusion of the study is that people feel better where there is less daily stress. A modern “happy city” is not about status or the pace of life, but about balance, stability, and comfort.
