The beach season in the Mykolaiv region: will the beaches open in 2026?

The approach of summer traditionally prompts Ukrainians to start thinking about their long-awaited holidays. However, in the context of the war, planning a holiday is fraught with security concerns. Vitaliy Kim, head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, recently clarified the situation and explained in a comment to Novyny.Live whether a full-scale holiday season can be expected in the region.

Why aren’t the Black Sea beaches in the Mykolaiv region opening?

Holidays on the Black Sea coast of the Mykolaiv region are, in all likelihood, set to remain off-limits this year. The main reason lies in the dangerous proximity of the resort areas to the front line and temporarily occupied territories.

According to Vitaliy Kim, the situation here is radically different from that in neighbouring Odesa. The distance from the beaches to potentially dangerous zones in the Mykolaiv region is just 4 to 30 kilometres. Such a distance makes the coastal strip vulnerable not only to missile strikes, but also to artillery fire and attacks by FPV drones. It is precisely because of the direct threat to human life that the military command is categorically opposed to mass gatherings by the sea.

At the same time, the local authorities are preparing for any possible turn of events. The administration has already drawn up a ‘just in case’ action plan and found ways to safely protect the waters from drifting mines. If the military grants official permission for demining and the use of the coastline, some sections may be opened. However, the head of the Regional State Administration stresses that one should not count on free access to the open sea this year.

Where can you swim in the Mykolaiv region in 2026?

A closed sea does not mean a complete lack of summer leisure activities. Safe inland water bodies, rivers, lakes, as well as private and public swimming pools will serve as alternatives for residents and visitors to the region.

The main and strict condition for their operation is the complete demining of the area. Swimming will be permitted only in those places that have undergone a thorough inspection by State Emergency Service specialists and received official confirmation of their safety.

What will happen to holiday resorts and tourism?

The prolonged ban on the holiday season is causing enormous damage to the local economy. Vitalii Kim describes the situation facing the tourism industry in the Mykolaiv region as catastrophic. Business owners of hotels, guesthouses and seaside leisure facilities are effectively unable to operate.

The regional authorities are aware of the scale of the crisis and do not intend to leave businesses to face the problem alone. Local authorities plan to actively seek financial assistance to support and eventually revive the region’s tourism sector, in order to preserve its potential for peacetime.

Reminder! In 2026, the beach season in Odesa is set to expand thanks to an increase in the number of official beaches and enhanced safety measures. Find out more about what is known regarding checks and conditions for tourists.
