Salary alone has long ceased to be the primary indicator of well-being. What matters far more is how much a person can afford after paying for housing, groceries, transportation, and daily expenses. That is why international analysts are increasingly assessing not only income but also the population’s real purchasing power.

A new ranking, published by visualcapitalist.com, revealed which countries offer people the best opportunities for a comfortable life and savings after covering basic expenses.

Which countries topped the purchasing power ranking?

The study took into account not only average wages but also the cost of living in each country—prices for housing, groceries, transportation, utilities, and daily expenses. This allowed for an assessment of the actual financial situation of residents in different countries.

The top 10 countries with the highest purchasing power in 2026 include:

● Luxembourg;

● Belgium;

● the Netherlands;

● Austria;

● the United States;

● Finland;

● Norway;

● Denmark;

● Ireland;

● Italy.

Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands topped the ranking. It is in these countries that the average income allows residents to cover daily expenses much more easily, maintain a comfortable standard of living, and build savings.

Why don’t high salaries always mean a comfortable life?

The authors of the study emphasize that it is not just the amount of the salary that matters, but the ratio of income to expenses. Even in countries with high salaries, real purchasing power can be lower due to: expensive housing, high taxes, transportation costs, prices for goods and services, and high utility bills.

That is why the ranking assesses not “nominal” salaries, but how many goods and services people can actually afford after covering their essential expenses.

Why did Luxembourg top the ranking?

Luxembourg has held high positions in international rankings of quality of life and financial well-being for several years in a row. Among the factors that influenced the country’s result:

● high average income;

● a stable labor market;

● robust social protection;

● high-quality infrastructure;

● a balance between wages and expenses.

Despite the high cost of living, the country’s residents still maintain one of the highest purchasing powers in the world.

How big is the gap between countries?

The study revealed a significant gap between the leading countries and those lower in the ranking. According to analysts’ estimates, workers in countries with the highest purchasing power can afford nearly three times as many goods and services as residents of countries lower in the ranking, such as Greece or France. This demonstrates once again that the standard of living is determined not only by wages but by a complex set of economic factors.

For Ukrainians, the topic of purchasing power remains particularly relevant amid rising prices in Europe and around the world. When moving abroad or planning long-term residence in EU countries, it is important to assess not only potential salary levels but also actual living costs—housing rent, transportation, groceries, healthcare, and taxes.

This is especially relevant for Ukrainians planning to drive to European countries. Before the trip, it is advisable to obtain an electronic road vignette in advance through Visit Ukraine, as in many EU countries, driving on toll roads without the proper permit can result in significant fines.

Why is the purchasing power ranking becoming increasingly important?

In recent years, the cost of living has been rising worldwide, so traditional income indicators no longer provide a complete picture of the quality of life in a given country. That is why international rankings increasingly take into account:

● price levels;

● housing affordability;

● transportation costs;

● tax burden;

● ability to save.

As a result, countries with high salaries do not always rank highest in quality of life, while nations with stable economies and moderate costs demonstrate significantly better indicators of public well-being.
