The lilac blooming season officially began in May 2026 at the M. M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. As reported by unian.ua, due to the prolonged cool spring this year, the plants bloomed later than in previous years. While in 2024 and 2025 the lilacs began to bloom as early as late April, this season’s peak blooming period shifted to early May.

Despite this, the botanical garden faced a huge influx of people as early as the first weekend. Visitors began arriving as early as dawn to see the lilacs in the soft light of daybreak and take photos without the crowds.

Long lines have formed at Kyiv’s botanical garden due to the lilac season

According to the publication, long lines form near the entrance to the botanical garden by lunchtime on weekends. People are standing not only at the ticket booths but also at the contactless payment terminals.

Although the botanical garden is large, the most popular spots with lilacs are traditionally overcrowded. Due to the large number of people eager to take photos, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a shot without other people in the frame.

In addition, the garden administration is drawing attention to the problem of careless treatment of plants. Some visitors, in their eagerness to take impressive photos, break lilac branches or enter restricted areas, which harms the plants.

What other plants are currently blooming at the Hryshko Botanical Garden?

Lilac season isn’t the only reason to visit the botanical garden this spring. Currently, the garden also features: the final blooms of cherry blossoms, magnolias, chestnuts, azaleas, rhododendrons, and peonies, which are just beginning to bloom. That is why May is traditionally considered one of the most beautiful times to stroll through the botanical garden in Kyiv.

By the way, for those planning spring trips around Ukraine, Visit Ukraine offers tours and itineraries across various regions of the country — from short weekend getaways to full-fledged journeys through natural and cultural sites.
