Which seaside cities in Europe are suitable for vacationing with a dog?
Choosing a resort is the first and most important step. Not every city with a sea is automatically pet-friendly: in some regions of Spain and France, dogs are not allowed on the beach at all, and fines for violations can reach 500–1000 euros. Therefore, focus on specific cities with proven infrastructure.
Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is one of the most dog-friendly cities in Europe. There is a special beach, Platja dels Gossos (translated as “dog beach”), located in the Forum district. Entrance is free, there is fresh water for animals, a fenced area and a shower for people. In addition to the beach:
- Most cafes and restaurants in Barcelona allow pets to sit on the terrace.
- The city has an extensive network of pet stores and veterinary clinics.
- Most 3–5 star hotels accept pets (often with an additional charge of 10–30 euros/night).
- Park Güell, the Barceloneta promenade and most of the district's squares are open to dogs on a leash
Tip: Book hotels in advance with the “pets allowed” filter on Booking.com or through sites like BringFido. In season (June-August), pet-friendly rooms are quickly sold out.
Rimini, Italy
Rimini is a classic family resort on the Adriatic, and it is well adapted for holidays with pets. Rimini's beaches have designated “Spiaggia per cani” zones – fenced areas where dogs can run off-leash. What is important to know:
- Swimming season for dogs: usually from June to September.
- Paid beach sectors often have their own pet-zones with shade, sun loungers and water.
- The city center and promenade are accessible with a dog on a leash.
- Cafes and pizzerias with outdoor terraces usually accept pets.
Hotels in Rimini with the “animali ammessi” sign are quite common, but the conditions vary: some only accept small dogs up to 10 kg, others without restrictions. Always check before booking.
Algarve, Portugal
The Algarve is a southern region of Portugal with a warm climate and incredible rocky beaches. Portugal is generally considered one of the most dog-friendly countries in Europe.
Beaches for dogs in the Algarve:
- Praia do Barranco das Canas near Portimão is one of the most famous dog-friendly beaches in the region
- Meia Praia near Lagos is a large beach where pets are allowed in certain sections.
In the low season (October-April), restrictions are lifted on most beaches and dogs can walk freely.
The city of Faro, the administrative center of the Algarve, has several parks and a promenade where dog owners meet every day. Veterinary care in the region is developed, there are 24-hour clinics.
We have written about the cities in Europe where dog and cat owners will be most comfortable when traveling or moving here.
Split, Croatia
Croatia is actively developing pet-friendly tourism. Split – the largest city on the Dalmatian coast – offers dog owners several options.
- Žnjan beach has a designated area for dogs.
- Brač Island, accessible by ferry from Split (~50 minutes), has beaches with fewer visitors and more loyal rules.
- Old Town (UNESCO) – Diocletian's Palace – is available for walking with a dog.
Many apartments and villas in Split and the suburbs accept pets. Croatia is a member of the EU, so the import of animals is subject to standard EU rules (pet passport, rabies vaccination, chip).
Varna, Bulgaria
Varna is the largest city on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria and an affordable option for Ukrainians. The distance from Odessa to Varna is about 550 km.
There are dog walking areas on the Central Beach and in the Sea Garden park. Dogs are allowed on a leash along the Varna embankment. In addition, the city has several dog-friendly cafes and restaurants, mainly in the center. Mid-range hotels and apartments through Airbnb/Booking actively offer accommodation with pets.
Crete Island, Greece
Crete, the largest island in Greece, has a reputation as a relatively loyal place for animals. The tourist infrastructure is well developed, and in smaller coastal towns (Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos, Ierapetra) dog owners feel more comfortable than in the tourist-overloaded Heraklion.
- “Blue Flag” beaches in Greece officially prohibit animals. However, less visited beaches and beaches in private complexes often have their own rules.
- There are hotels and villas with the “pets welcome” sign in Crete, but there are fewer of them than in Spain or Portugal. Booking with a direct request to the owner gives a better result than a filter on an aggregator
What do you need to prepare before going to the sea with a dog?
Preparation is 70% of a successful trip. Collected documents, checked health status of the animal and correctly packed things will make your vacation comfortable.
Documents and veterinary preparation
Required:
- Veterinary passport - international standard with vaccination records.
- Rabies vaccination - current (at least 21 days before the trip, but not more than 1 year). For EU countries - a prerequisite.
- Microchip - ISO standard (15-digit number). For EU countries, the animal will not be allowed to enter without a chip.
- Veterinary certificate (form 1 or EU Health Certificate) – issued by a veterinarian before the trip.
- Certificate of treatment for parasites (ticks, worms) – updated 1–5 days before entering some countries.
It is additionally recommended to have with you the animal's medical card with a list of chronic diseases and medications, as well as contacts of the veterinary clinic at the place of rest.

What to take with you to the sea with a dog
- Carrier or cage for transportation (mandatory for air travel).
- Harness + two leashes (main and spare).
- Muzzle (in some countries mandatory for certain breeds in public places).
- Foldable bowl for water and food.
- A supply of usual food for the entire duration of the trip (a sharp change in diet on the road causes stress).
- Anti-tick remedy (drops or collar).
- First aid kit: antiseptic, bandage, enterosorbent, seasickness remedy for animals.
- Bath towel.
- Sunscreen for hairless skin (nose, ears, stomach).
Rules for transporting a dog to the sea
Car
The most convenient option for trips to Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania.
Plan stops every 2–3 hours for a walk and a drink.
Important! Never leave an animal in a closed car in the sun - even 15 minutes on a hot day can be fatal.
Air transport
The rules for transporting animals differ for each airline. Most airlines take small dogs (up to 8–10 kg including a carrier) in the cabin. Large dogs - only in the cargo hold. Inform the airline about the animal in advance and reserve a seat for it.
A full list of airlines that allow pets in the cabin is here.
What are the rules for dogs on beaches?
The rules vary greatly depending on the country, city, and specific beach. Here are some general guidelines that apply to most popular resorts.
- Leash – mandatory on most beaches, even in designated dog areas.
- Cleaning – the owner is required to clean up after the pet. Most dog-friendly places provide free cleaning kits.
- Access times – many beaches only allow dogs before 9:00 and after 18:00–19:00 during peak season.
- Water – not all dogs tolerate sea water well. Rinse the coat with fresh water after swimming.
How to choose a pet-friendly accommodation near the sea?
Choosing the right accommodation is one of the main tasks when planning a holiday with a dog near the sea. What to look for when booking:
- The “pets allowed” filter on Booking.com, Airbnb, BringFido is a starting point, but not the final answer.
- Specify restrictions: many properties only accept small dogs or have restrictions on the number of animals
- Ask about additional fees: pet fees can be fixed (20–50 euros for the entire trip) or daily (5–15 euros).
- Having a fenced yard or exit is a critically important condition for large breeds.
- Floor and elevator – dogs, especially older ones, find it difficult to climb the 4th–5th floor on foot.

What other resorts outside Europe are suitable for vacationing with a dog?
Turkey (Bodrum, Cesme)
Turkey is not officially a member of the EU, so the rules for importing animals are slightly different. To enter, you need: a veterinary passport, a current rabies vaccination, a microchip and a veterinary certificate. Bodrum and Cesme are the most dog-friendly resorts in the country with several beaches that unofficially allow animals early in the morning and evening. 3-4 star hotels in these regions often accept animals without an additional charge.
UAE (Dubai)
Dubai is actively developing pet-friendly infrastructure. JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence) beach has a dedicated area for dogs. The temperature in summer (40°C+) makes traveling with a pet uncomfortable - the best time: October-April. Importing animals requires a separate permit from the UAE veterinary authorities.
A trip with a dog to the sea is a complete vacation, if you approach the choice of resort and preparation correctly. The most convenient destinations for dog owners in Europe are Barcelona, Rimini, Algarve, Split and Varna. For a trip, it is important to prepare the animal's documents in advance, choose pet-friendly accommodation with specific conditions and check the rules of the beaches in a particular city. Do not hide the presence of an animal when booking and choose the low or mid season - it is more convenient, cheaper and has fewer restrictions for your four-legged companion.
When planning a vacation with a dog abroad, it is important to take care not only of the animal's documents, but also of your own safety. Travel insurance will help you avoid large expenses in case of illness, injury, flight delay or loss of luggage.
The policy can cover medical care, hospitalization, dental services, compensation for flight cancellation, legal support and other unforeseen situations during the trip.
