How to Cross the Border into Poland in 2026: Documents, Lines, and Alternative Routes for Ukrainians

There is a widespread belief among Ukrainians that traveling abroad via Poland means waiting in line for hours. Experts from the legal department of Visit Ukraine told UNIAN how accurate this is and what actually determines the time it takes to cross the border.

“Yes, the Polish route is indeed very popular among Ukrainians, so there are usually more people there. But that doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to wait several hours. The situation at the border changes very quickly — sometimes literally every hour,” the experts explain.

What determines the waiting time at the border?

Several factors influence the length of the line. First, seasonality: during holidays and in the summer, there are significantly more people wanting to leave. Second, the day of the week: Fridays and Sundays traditionally see a larger influx of people. Third, the time of day: at certain hours, it’s a mad rush; at others, it’s almost empty.

Another factor is the method of crossing the border. Whether on foot, by bus, or by car — each has its own lines and its own processing speed, and everything depends on the workload at a specific border crossing at a specific time

Alternatives to Poland: Which other countries can you travel through?

If the lines at the Polish border are too long, Visit Ukraine experts suggest three main alternative routes to the EU: Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania.

The main advice from experts is to check online wait times before departure and be prepared to be flexible in choosing a border crossing. If there is a risk of an excessively long wait, it’s worth having a backup plan, as wait times at different border sections can vary drastically.

If you’re planning a trip and want to save time organizing your route, you can book a transfer between cities in Ukraine and cities in Europe on the Visit Ukraine platform—it’s convenient, with no unnecessary transfers or searching for transportation on the spot.

What documents are required to travel abroad from Ukraine in 2026?

Along with choosing your route, it’s important to prepare your documents — border guards have the right to check some of them. Here’s what you need to know.

The main document is a biometric passport, without which travel is not possible. Additionally, border guards may check:

● proof of funds — to ensure you can support yourself abroad;

● a return ticket — as confirmation of your intention to return;

● health insurance.

They may also ask about the purpose of your trip. In this case, it’s worth having confirmation: a housing reservation or an invitation from the host. The absence of a reservation isn’t a critical issue if you’re visiting friends or relatives, but some form of confirmation is desirable.

“The best option is an invitation from the person with whom you’ll be staying. It can be either official or informal. If there is no invitation—provide this person’s contact information and exact address. Sometimes a verbal explanation is sufficient — the main thing is to correctly explain the purpose of your trip,”, notes Visit Ukraine.

Experts emphasize: these rules apply throughout the entire Schengen Area, so checks may occur at any EU border, not just in Poland.

Special cases: temporary protection, refugees, and men subject to military service

If you are traveling abroad for the first time to obtain temporary protection, a passport is sufficient. Temporary protection status is granted after crossing the border, so no additional documents are required.

If you already have temporary protection or refugee status and are returning to your country of residence, the procedure is usually simpler, but a certain set of documents is still required:

● passport;

● PESEL UKR or a similar document confirming your status in the relevant country;

● health insurance policy — recommended.

A separate category applies to men aged 18 to 60 who are subject to military service in Ukraine. For them, a military registration document is mandatory, as well as proof of grounds for traveling abroad in accordance with current regulations. It is critically important to verify this before your trip to avoid delays at the border.

We remind you! A bus to Poland can be a cheap and convenient option, but lines at the border often last for hours. Read about when to choose this route, what risks to consider, and what alternatives are available.
