Electronic TINs are now in use in Ukraine: is a paper code still required?

From 14 May, Ukrainians no longer need to carry a separate paper certificate of their tax identification number. Ukraine has taken another step towards a ‘paperless’ system by fully equating the digital document on a smartphone with its physical counterpart.

Tax identification number in ‘Dii’: how the electronic Taxpayer Identification Card works

The official move away from the mandatory use of the paper Taxpayer Identification Card (TIC) was announced by Valeria Koval, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation, at the Mintsyfra Summit in Kyiv.

Now, the electronic taxpayer card, which is displayed in the state app Dii, has exactly the same legal force as the traditional paper document. This means that no organisation has the right to refuse service on the grounds of the absence of a physical certificate with a stamp. The digital format has been fully legalised and integrated into all state and financial processes.

How to send your TIN via ‘Diya’ to a bank or government agency

The main advantage of the electronic TIN is the convenience and speed of verification. The digital document in the app is equipped with a special QR code. It is with this that staff at bank branches, government agencies, notaries and other officials can instantly and securely verify the authenticity of a citizen’s data.

The data transfer process is simplified as much as possible thanks to the sharing feature. Citizens no longer need to make photocopies — simply open the app on your smartphone and confirm the transfer of a copy of the document to the institution’s system in just a few clicks.

What to do with the paper TIN

As the electronic TIN fully replaces the physical one from 14 May, there is no longer any urgent need to keep and present the paper certificate everywhere.

The old paper document remains valid and is not cancelled, but it becomes an archive document for your own peace of mind. You can simply leave it at home with your other old documents. For all everyday tasks, whether opening a bank account, finding employment, sending parcels or accessing public services, all you’ll need is a smartphone with the app installed.

Reminder! From 14 May, Ukrainians in Ukraine and abroad can apply for a taxpayer card via ‘e-Consul’ or the ‘Diya’ app — without queues or paperwork. Find out how the new services work, how long the application process takes and who can use them.

asked questions
How do I add my TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) to the ‘Diya’ app?
Your Taxpayer Identification Number is automatically loaded into the ‘Diya’ app once you have logged in via BankID. The system sends a request to the State Register of Natural Persons — Taxpayers. If your details in the bank and the tax service match, your electronic TIN will appear in your list of documents. No further action or manual entry of numbers is required.
