Europe is moving toward a single rail ticket: how the “One Journey, One Ticket” system will work and what will change for passengers

The European Commission is launching a major rail reform, “One Journey – One Ticket,” for cross-border travel. Find out how the new single ticket will allow passengers to combine journeys across different operators, simplify booking, and protect passengers with compensation of up to 50% in the event of train delays

Planning train trips across Europe has long been a real challenge for travelers. Buying tickets for different segments of the route, coordinating connections from multiple operators, and the risk of missing a transfer due to a delay on the first train forced passengers to waste a lot of time and nerves. However, the European rail network is soon set to undergo major transformations.

The European Commission is actively promoting a new large-scale initiative called “One Journey, One Ticket.” This reform aims to fully unify and simplify the process of booking cross-border rail travel throughout the European Union, as well as provide rail travelers with an unprecedented level of legal and financial protection. This is reported by euronews.

Why does the European booking system need to change?

The current European system for selling train tickets is often too fragmented. It effectively prevents passengers from booking a comprehensive cross-border journey from point A to point B with a single simple and straightforward transaction.

When a route crosses several countries or involves trains from different rail companies, travelers are forced to search for options on numerous websites, install a bunch of mobile apps, and purchase separate tickets. This not only complicates trip planning but also leaves passengers completely vulnerable to unforeseen circumstances: if one operator is delayed, the ticket for another operator’s service is simply wasted.

While European authorities are implementing global changes, you can make your travels comfortable right now. To avoid wasting time on dozens of different websites, you can use the convenient ticket booking system for all modes of transport on Visit Ukraine, which allows you to quickly and easily find the best routes and book train or bus tickets with a single click.

What will the new-style ticket offer, and what benefits will travelers receive?

The main point of the European Commission’s reform package is to remove the current barriers that cause cross-border or multi-operator trips to be booked across different digital platforms. The new single ticket will allow you to combine several train segments into a single booking, regardless of how many different companies operate those lines.

As Lena Schilling, a Green Party member of the European Parliament, explains, the process will be as simple as possible: passengers will simply need to open their rail app (whether national or any other they usually use), find the desired connecting route, and purchase it with a single click.

Thanks to these innovations, searching and purchasing will become easier for several reasons:

● Rail companies will be legally required to allow third-party platforms to sell their tickets.

● Major service providers will have to display on their own sales pages absolutely all available train routes in their country, not just their own branded trains.

This guarantees travelers full transparency, the ability to easily compare prices, and the option to purchase all necessary tickets at once on a single website.

Full protection and financial compensation: how will train delays be penalized?

One of the most important elements of the “One Journey, One Ticket” initiative is the establishment of comprehensive, consistent, and clear passenger rights throughout the entire duration of their rail journey. As noted by euronews, the reform introduces strict financial liability for carriers in the event of schedule disruptions.

If a journey is interrupted due to a delay or cancellation of a train, the railway company responsible for the disruption will be required to reroute passengers to their final destinations without any additional charges or fees. While waiting, passengers are guaranteed free assistance, including meals, cold drinks, as well as a hotel and transfer if an overnight stay is necessary.

In addition to a mandatory alternative route, passengers are entitled to guaranteed monetary compensation for the total travel delay:

● a delay of 60 to 119 minutes — the operator is required to refund 25% of the ticket price;

● flight delay of 120 minutes or more — the passenger is paid compensation amounting to 50% of the ticket price.

This approach will put rail passengers on equal footing with air travelers and make train travel across Europe significantly more reliable and safer.

asked questions
When will the “One Journey, One Ticket” system be launched in EU countries?
Currently, the European Commission and the European Parliament have agreed on a reform package and are actively promoting this initiative. Implementing the system requires the technical integration of databases from various rail operators. The exact launch dates at the national level are being determined separately, but carriers are already required to prepare their platforms for data sharing.
