Looking for affordable holiday options for 2026? Whilst accommodation prices in popular European destinations are hitting record highs, there are still hidden gems across the continent for budget-conscious travellers. We’ve put together an updated ranking of countries where apartment rentals cost no more than €50. Find out where to go on holiday for the cheapest price
New data from analysts suggests that the gap in the cost of tourist accommodation across the continent is becoming increasingly pronounced. Whilst prices per night can exceed €200 in popular tourist destinations, it is entirely possible to find comfortable options for less than €40 in some regions of Eastern Europe and the Balkans.
By the way, you should also arrange for travel insurance before your trip. You can quickly purchase travel insurance online through the Visit Ukraine platform.
Where is the cheapest place to find holiday accommodation in Europe
According to a new study by the specialist platform AirDNA, which analysed average daily rates (ADR), occupancy levels and booking trends, North Macedonia has emerged as the undisputed leader in affordability for 2026. The average cost of a night’s stay here is just €39.81. Most often, tourists book apartments in the capital, Skopje, or near the picturesque Lake Ohrid, and they do so on the spur of the moment — on average, just 13 days before arrival.
Next comes Kosovo with an average cost of €41.63 per night. As a rule, this region rarely serves as a destination in its own right, but is visited by travellers as part of a wider tour of the Balkan Peninsula, with an average stay of around five days.
Budget holidays 2026: the cheapest travel destinations
Much of Eastern Europe continues to attract travellers with its unique blend of rich history, natural beauty and low prices. A prime example is Moldova, where the average daily cost is €45.49. AirDNA experts note that Moldova has the highest growth rate in the popularity of short-term rentals among budget-friendly countries. Tourists opt for a leisurely holiday here: they stay in Chișinău, near picturesque monasteries and in wine-producing regions for an average of 5.4 nights (the second-longest stay in Europe).
