New luxury rail route in Austria: Vienna to be connected to an Alpine alternative to Hallstatt
The Austrian railway company Silverstar Railways is launching the premium STAR-Blue train from Vienna to the Alps. Find out how the new luxury route will open up Bad Aussee to tourists—a cozy and crowd-free alternative to the famous Hallstatt
The European rail network is constantly evolving, offering travelers new and exciting destinations and convenient cross-border connections. However, the launch of a completely new rail company in the European market is a much rarer and more significant event, especially when it involves opening a route to one of the most beautiful yet still little-known corners of Central Europe. This is reported by Travel Off Path.
A new large-scale railway project in Austria aims to make one of the country’s most atmospheric and picturesque Alpine towns significantly more accessible to foreign visitors. This initiative could significantly change the map of tourist flows in the region.
Vienna is becoming a new rail hub for luxury travelers
The Austrian capital, Vienna, is not usually perceived by foreign tourists as the main or final destination of European travels, with the exception of the winter season of Christmas markets. Most often, travelers visit this magnificent city in transit, as part of a larger tour route during trips to neighboring European Union countries. However, the Austrian capital is determined to change this trend by actively developing new transportation and tourism routes for travelers from around the world.
The newly established railway company Silverstar Railways will be based in Vienna. It officially positions itself as an operator of premium-class luxury tourist transportation. This unique travel format perfectly matches the classic image of the Austrian capital, which is known worldwide for its majestic imperial palaces, wide historic boulevards, and the distinctive atmosphere of European luxury.
When planning your future trip to this sophisticated European hub, it’s worth taking care of the logistics in advance. The ticket booking system for all modes of transport on Visit Ukraine will help you easily find convenient travel options from Ukraine to Vienna, allowing you to combine your entire journey into a single comfortable and straightforward itinerary.
STAR-Blue Route: A Journey to the Heart of the Alps and the Lake District
The private railway company Silverstar Railways was founded in 2024, but it has already reached the final stage of preparation for the long-awaited launch of its first exclusive route. According to preliminary plans, the STAR-Blue branded train is set to embark on its maiden voyage in May 2027.
The route will operate twice a week—every Tuesday and Thursday. The train will run on this schedule until September, after which the organizers plan to carefully adapt the schedule and specifics of the trips for the winter tourist season, which is traditionally in high demand in the Austrian Alps. Passengers on the premium train will be offered an exciting journey with seven stops, as well as a unique opportunity to purchase a special all-inclusive package that will ensure maximum comfort during the trip.
The STAR-Blue signature train will travel through exceptionally picturesque cities and stations, including:
● Vienna (main departure point from Vienna Hauptbahnhof);
● St. Pölten;
● Linz;
● Gmunden;
● Bad Ischl;
● Hallstatt;
● Bad Aussee (the route’s final destination).
The final destination of this railway line will be the famous Salzkammergut region—one of Austria’s most renowned and attractive natural areas, celebrated for its crystal-clear lakes and majestic Alpine mountains. The town of Bad Aussee has been designated as the main highlight and grand finale of the entire railway route. Experts and authors of the article compare this incredibly cozy Alpine town to the real-life settings of the popular Disney animated film Frozen.
Despite the incredible natural beauty and authenticity of the entire region, Bad Aussee remains a little-known destination even among very experienced European travelers. Travelers usually opt for the more well-known and popular nearby locations, such as Salzburg or Hallstatt itself.
In addition, Silverstar Railways ambitiously states that the railway startup will not limit itself to domestic routes. The company has already officially received the necessary permission to launch a direct international service to Venice, Italy. Moreover, the management of the European operator is currently actively considering six more promising international routes to expand its network of luxury express trains, including rail routes to Slovenia and Croatia.

The little-known “twin” of Hallstatt without the tourist crowds
The researchers cite the cozy Bad Aussee as the ideal and far less well-known alternative to Hallstatt—one of Austria’s most popular but critically overcrowded tourist towns. The launch of a new premium-class rail service could radically change the current market situation and draw well-deserved attention from foreign visitors to this quieter Alpine region of the country.
The name Hallstatt is on everyone’s lips today, as this small Austrian village has become one of the main and most recognizable tourist symbols in all of Europe following the release of the aforementioned animated film Frozen. Its massive popularity on social media triggered such a huge influx of visitors that local authorities were eventually forced to impose strict administrative restrictions on tourists and tour buses. Hallstatt is an extremely small town in terms of area, and it simply isn’t physically or infrastructure-wise equipped to handle such mass tourism.
That is precisely why the new railway route to neighboring Bad Aussee could be a real lifesaver for travelers seeking the same magical Alpine atmosphere but wanting to relax without the crowds. Bad Aussee is located just one train stop away from bustling Hallstatt. Although this luxurious train route from Silverstar Railways didn’t exist yet during the peak of the global popularity of the animated hit Frozen, getting here by regular transport wasn’t all that difficult.
This town offers visitors virtually identical, fantastic Alpine scenery: traditional wooden chalets, jagged mountain peaks, and picture-perfect views. At the same time, there are far fewer foreign travelers here. Unlike its popular neighbor, Bad Aussee isn’t located directly on the shore of a large lake, yet the town perfectly captures the unique natural atmosphere of the Salzkammergut lake region, as three stunning bodies of water are situated right nearby: Altaussee, Grundlsee, and the mysterious Toplitzsee.
Wellness getaways, flower festivals, and safety in the Austrian Alps
Among Austrians themselves, Bad Aussee is known first and foremost as a first-class balneological resort and an ideal destination for a wellness getaway. In addition, it is the traditional venue for the country’s largest and most vibrant flower festival.
One of the main and most famous local resorts is the Narzissen Vital Resort—a modern hotel and spa center located in a picturesque valley near the majestic Dachstein and Lozer mountains. This complex is unique in that it uses a natural salt solution in its wellness programs, extracted directly from the depths of the Altaussee salt mountain. To ensure maximum relaxation and rejuvenation for guests, the resort features:
● an authentic salt grotto;
● a heated open-air saltwater lake;
● a special steam room with healing salt inhalations.
In addition to peaceful walks through the town, spa visits, and admiring the mountain scenery, experts advise tourists to be sure to check out several iconic locations and events in Bad Aussee:
● Lake Altaussee. It is famous for its crystal-clear water, mesmerizing mountain panoramas, and the opportunity for summer swimming. Comfortable and safe eco-trails for walking are laid out around the entire lake.
● Mount Lozer. This is an extremely popular spot for hiking enthusiasts, featuring panoramic viewing platforms and a stunning winding road that winds its way up the mountain slopes.
● Narzissenfest. A traditional and spectacular spring festival featuring authentic folk music, the highlight of which is large-scale floral figures and arrangements made of white daffodils, which are ceremoniously paraded through the streets and carried on boats across the water.
Another compelling reason to choose this region for a vacation is its overall safety. The authors of the article specifically emphasize that Austria is officially considered one of the safest and most peaceful countries in Europe for foreign tourists. The U.S. State Department has classified Austria in the highest safety category—“Level 1: Exercise Normal Precaution”—which indicates the lowest level of risk for travelers. In addition, tourists themselves rate their personal safety while in Austria extremely highly: the country achieved an impressive score of 90 out of a possible 100 on the Travel Off Path tourism safety index.
