Poland is closing its airspace over its eastern border: this is no cause for panic, and here’s why
The news that Poland has closed its airspace to aircraft has alarmed many tourists. People are widely concerned that flights will be cancelled and their long-awaited trips will be disrupted. In reality, there is no cause for panic, and international flights are operating as normal. Find out exactly what has changed
Rumours are spreading rapidly on social media that Poland is allegedly closing its airspace along its eastern border completely due to the threat of shelling from Russia. Against the backdrop of these reports, many travellers have begun to worry about their trips. However, the real situation is quite different, and there is no cause for concern, explains ‘RBC-Ukraine’.
What does the closure of Poland’s airspace from 10 June mean?
In reality, this is not a total closure of the skies, but simply a continuation of existing rules. From 10 June to 9 September, Poland is indeed restricting air traffic, but these measures will apply exclusively within a special border zone with Ukraine and Belarus (20 to 50 kilometres wide).
This navigational warning applies only to low altitudes — from ground level up to FL95, which is approximately 3 kilometres. Thus, Warsaw is simply continuing to maintain a special control regime, which has been operating in this region without panic or unnecessary fuss.
Are passenger planes currently flying over Poland
The main question on tourists’ minds is whether civilian flights will be cancelled. The answer is clear: no, international flights will not be affected.
The rules introduced are purely a technical measure. Regular passenger aircraft fly at much higher altitudes (around 10–11 kilometres), so they are not affected by this zone. All scheduled and charter flights will continue to operate on their usual routes without any disruptions or delays related to this regulation.

Who will be affected by the flight restrictions in Poland
The restrictions apply exclusively to owners of small aircraft. The rules will apply to private light aircraft, gliders and civilian drones. Strict air traffic control will be in place for these during the day, whilst at night – from sunset to sunrise – there will be a complete ban on flying.
However, all state services are exempt from these restrictions. Military, rescue and medical aviation will continue to carry out their tasks unhindered in the border zone on a round-the-clock basis.
Why has Poland closed its airspace along the border with Ukraine and Belarus?
The decision to extend the special regime was taken solely at the request of the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces. The main aim of these measures is to ensure the country’s national security.
Given the current geopolitical tensions, this is a standard procedure for controlling the border area. It allows the Polish military to monitor the situation more effectively, protect the country’s airspace and avoid accidental incidents involving civilian drones or small aircraft near the borders.
