The World's Most Disappointing Tourist Destinations of 2026: A Ranking Based on 100,000 Reviews
Researchers analyzed nearly 100,000 reviews of popular tourist attractions and determined which places most often fail to live up to expectations. Find out which destinations topped the list of disappointments and why even famous locations fail to impress tourists
Researchers analyzed nearly 100,000 reviews of 200 popular tourist attractions in the world’s 50 most-visited countries and identified the places that most often disappoint travelers. The results were published by Euronews.
The three most common reasons for dissatisfaction turned out to be quite predictable: huge crowds of tourists, inflated prices, and the gap between reality and the beautiful photos on social media. It is this trio that appears time and again in negative reviews around the world.

Alton Towers — the undisputed leader in disappointment
The British theme park Alton Towers in Staffordshire took first place with 38.2% negative reviews—nearly twice as many as the runner-up in the ranking. The park is one of the largest and most famous in the UK, but it is clear that expectations consistently exceed reality: complaints about lines, prices, and overall service quality are the most common.
Szechenyi Baths — the only European location in the top 5
Budapest’s Szechenyi Baths took fourth place with 16.6% negative reviews. This is one of the largest and oldest thermal complexes in Europe, which has long been a must-see on tourist itineraries in the Hungarian capital. However, tourists are increasingly complaining about overcrowding, long lines, and the feeling that the place has turned into a mass-tourist attraction rather than a genuine bathhouse.

Fushimi Inari Shrine — the only Asian representative
The Japanese Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto rounds out the top ten with 12% negative reviews. It is one of the most photographed places in Japan thanks to the thousands of torii gates leading up the mountain. However, an actual visit is increasingly disappointing: during peak hours, the place is packed with crowds, and any hope of solitary contemplation of nature and the sacred atmosphere is dashed even before reaching the shrine.
Which cities and countries disappoint tourists the most?
In addition to specific locations, the study also identified the overall geography of tourist disappointments.
The cities with the highest percentage of dissatisfied tourists are:
● Seattle — 8.9% negative reviews
● Budapest — 6.3%
● London — 6%
● Bangkok — 6%
Among countries, the highest proportion of disappointed tourists was recorded in:
● United Kingdom — 7.9%
● Canada — 7.9%
● United States — 7.5%
It is noteworthy that the United Kingdom and Canada share first place among countries with the same rate. The United States, despite dominating the rankings for individual locations, ranks third overall among countries.
