On July 1, 2026, a new stage of social support reform begins in Germany. The Bürgergeld system, which has provided basic assistance to people with low incomes in recent years, is gradually giving way to a new model - Grundsicherung.

The new program not only changes the name of the payments, but also tightens the requirements for beneficiaries. The German authorities emphasize a faster return of people to the labor market, and consider social support as a temporary tool for ensuring basic needs.

We tell you who will be entitled to payments, what amounts are provided for in 2026, and when to expect the funds.

What will change after the transition from Bürgergeld to Grundsicherung?

The main change will be the replacement of Bürgergeld with Grundsicherung. At the same time, the reform provides for increased control by employment centers (Jobcenter) and more active participation of beneficiaries in employment programs.

In particular, persons receiving social support must participate in meetings with Jobcenter representatives, attend integration events and consider the proposed employment options.

In the event of systematic refusal to cooperate or unjustified disregard of the requirements of the employment center, payments may be reduced or temporarily suspended.

If you are already receiving social assistance in Germany, read about the reasons for the reduction and suspension of social benefits in Germany for Ukrainians, which explains in detail the new sanctions, Jobcenter rules and possible consequences of violating the established requirements.

Who is entitled to receive Grundsicherung?

The following can apply for basic assistance in Germany:

- Persons over the age of 18 who legally reside in Germany;

- People who do not have sufficient income to independently provide for basic needs;

- Persons with complete or partial loss of working capacity;

- Citizens of retirement age;

- People with officially confirmed disability.

When considering the application, the competent authorities take into account not only the applicant's personal income, but also the financial situation of the household, the availability of savings and other assets.

What is the amount of basic benefit in Germany in 2026?

In 2026, the estimated amount of the standard basic benefit (Regelbedarf) is 563 euros per month for single people.

The amount of benefit depending on the composition of the family is as follows:

- 563 euros - for single people, single parents and adults with minor partners;

- 506 euros - for adult partners in a married couple;

- 451 euros - for young people aged 15 to 24 living separately;

- 471 euros - for children aged 14 to 17;

- 390 euros - for children aged 6 to 13;

- 357 euros – for children under 6 years old.

These funds are intended to cover basic expenses for food, clothing, hygiene products, transport and other daily needs.

In addition to the basic payment, the Grundsicherung system can also cover housing rent, heating costs, health insurance and individual needs related to care or special life circumstances, but within reasonable limits (Angemessenheit) set by each municipality individually.

When will Grundsicherung payments be received?

As before, the benefit will be paid in advance for the following month. Usually, the funds are transferred on the last banking day of the previous month or on the first working day of the new month.

At the same time, the actual date of crediting depends on the work of banking institutions, so the transfer may arrive with a delay of up to several working days.

The approximate payment schedule is as follows:

- payment for July 2026 – June 30, 2026;

- payment for August 2026 – July 31, 2026;

- payment for September 2026 – August 31, 2026;

- payment for October 2026 – September 30, 2026;

- payment for November 2026 – October 30, 2026;

- payment for December 2026 – November 30, 2026;

- payment for January 2027 – December 30, 2026.

That is why beneficiaries are recommended to plan their expenses taking into account possible bank delays.

What do Ukrainians in Germany need to know?

For Ukrainians who are in Germany on the basis of temporary protection or other legal status, the reform means that they need to be more attentive to the requirements of the Jobcenter.

Particular attention should be paid to attending scheduled appointments, participating in integration programs, and informing the authorities in a timely manner about changes in their place of residence, employment, or marital status.

Despite increased control, Grundsicherung remains a key mechanism of social protection for people who are temporarily unable to provide for their own basic needs. At the same time, the new system is increasingly focused on stimulating employment and financial independence of beneficiaries.

The rules of social support in Germany are becoming increasingly complex, and errors when processing documents or communicating with the Jobcenter can lead to a delay, reduction, or even suspension of payments. If you are planning to move, are applying for temporary protection, a residence permit, or have questions about your status in Germany or another country, it is worth getting professional advice in advance.
