Every year on June 20, the world celebrates World Refugee Day – an international date dedicated to people who have been forced to leave their homes due to wars, armed conflicts, persecution, human rights violations or natural disasters.

For Ukrainians, World Refugee Day has a special meaning. In recent years, millions of Ukrainian citizens have personally experienced forced displacement, adaptation to a new environment and seeking safety far from home. That is why this day is a reminder not only of global challenges, but also of the importance of support, humanity and international solidarity in difficult times.

We have collected the history of Refugee Day, the global significance of the holiday and important facts about this day in this article.

History of World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day was officially established by the UN General Assembly in 2000. It was first celebrated on June 20, 2001, the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, which became one of the most important international documents in the field of protection of the rights of people seeking asylum.

The date of June 20 was not chosen by chance. Earlier, this day was celebrated as African Refugee Day in many African countries, and later the initiative was extended to the global level.

Today, World Refugee Day is supported by governments, international organizations, charitable foundations and public associations around the world.

Why does the world celebrate Refugee Day?

For most people, home is something permanent and familiar. However, millions of people are forced to leave their cities and countries due to circumstances beyond their control. World Refugee Day is designed to:

- Draw attention to the problems of forcibly displaced persons;

- Raise awareness of the rights of refugees;

- Help fight discrimination and prejudice;

- Remind the importance of international solidarity;

- Support the integration of people starting a new life abroad.

On June 12, the new Pact on Migration and Asylum officially entered into force in the EU – the biggest update to the bloc’s migration system in decades. Find out what the reform entails in this article.

Important facts about Refugee Day

More than half of the world’s refugees are children

Children are one of the most vulnerable groups in times of crisis and war. They often face interruptions in their education, loss of their homes and the need to adapt to a new environment.

Most refugees stay close to their homeland

Despite popular belief, a significant number of refugees do not move to distant countries. Most often, people seek safety in neighboring states located near the conflict zone.

Not all internally displaced persons are refugees

Refugee status has a specific legal definition. A person receives it only after going through the appropriate procedure and confirming the grounds for international protection.

Refugees contribute to the economy of host countries

Studies show that after integrating into the labor market, refugees open businesses, create jobs and contribute to the economic development of host countries.

Ukrainians abroad can receive financial assistance for voluntary return to their homeland. Which countries already pay up to 2,500 euros for the decision to return and how does the AVRR program work? Details here.

World Refugee Day in numbers

According to international organizations, the number of people who have been forced to leave their homes due to wars, conflicts and persecution in the world already exceeds 120 million people. This figure includes refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons and people in need of international protection.

That is why the issues of migration, integration and human rights protection remain among the key challenges of our time.

How is World Refugee Day celebrated?

In different countries of the world, the following events are held on this day:

- Charity events;

- Cultural festivals;

- Educational campaigns;

- Conferences and forums;

- Exhibitions of photographs and documentary projects;

- Fundraising to support humanitarian programs.

The main goal of such events is to show human stories behind dry statistical figures and to remind that every refugee is first and foremost a person with their dreams, talents and desire for a safe life.

Supporting refugees begins with access to information

Moving to another country is often accompanied by the need to obtain documents. And this is not only temporary protection status or refugee status, but also visas, residence permits, documents for employment or family reunification. In such situations, the help of a migration lawyer allows you to better navigate the legislation of the destination country and avoid mistakes when processing documents.

Visit Ukraine specialists provide consultations on migration issues, help choose the appropriate type of permit and accompany clients at various stages of legalizing their stay abroad.

Get professional legal assistance and find the best solution for moving, legalizing their stay or finding employment abroad.

Reminder! Soon, a significant part of refugees from Ukraine will complete a five-year period of residence, which opens access to German citizenship. However, German agencies are seriously afraid of collapse, and lawyers are arguing about the validity of paragraph 24. Read here about the main requirements, chances of obtaining a passport and risks for the migration system.
