The Czech authorities continue to gradually adapt the legislation to the long-term stay of Ukrainians in the country. One of the important changes that directly affects vehicle owners is the update of the provisions of the Lex Ukrajina law regarding cars with Ukrainian registration.

The new rules are aimed at integrating Ukrainian vehicles into the Czech system of registration and control, as well as ensuring equal conditions for all drivers who constantly use cars in the Czech Republic.

It is important to understand: the bill is currently under consideration by the parliament - after its support by both chambers and signing by the president, the main norms will come into force on January 1, 2027.

Read also, the Czech Republic is preparing a large-scale package of changes for Ukrainians with temporary protection. About the new rules that will come into force in 2027 here.

What do the new changes entail?

According to the updated rules, Ukrainian citizens who are in the Czech Republic on the basis of temporary protection or a tolerance visa will be able to officially register cars purchased directly in the Czech Republic.

However, the main change concerns not only new purchases. All temporary protection holders who are already driving in the Czech Republic with cars with Ukrainian license plates will be required to re-register them with Czech ones.

Let us remind you! Since 2024, such vehicles must already be entered into the special IS UA registration database - and as of March 2026, more than 28,400 vehicles were recorded in it.

In fact, this means that Ukrainians will be able to register vehicles on the same terms as local residents, receiving Czech license plates and all accompanying documents.

The Czech government emphasizes that the changes are aimed not only at simplifying administrative procedures, but also at improving road safety and monitoring the technical condition of vehicles.

When will the new rules come into force?

The transition to the new system will take place gradually.

The main stages are as follows:

- During 2027, the transition to Czech registration will remain voluntary;

- From January 1, 2028, car registration in the Czech Republic for owners subject to the new rules will become mandatory;

- Vehicles will receive Czech license plates and will be entered into national registers.

Thus, car owners will have enough time to prepare documents and bring their vehicles into compliance with local requirements.

Those who ignore the requirement face serious consequences: after 2028, driving a car with Ukrainian license plates will be subject to fines of tens of thousands of crowns and possible confiscation of the vehicle directly on the road.

The Czech Republic is discussing possible changes to the rules of social support for Ukrainian refugees starting in 2026, details at the link.

The Czech Republic provides Ukrainian refugees with the opportunity to settle in Europe and move from temporary protection to long-term status. Instructions on how Ukrainians can obtain a residence permit in the Czech Republic for 5 years are available here.

What obligations will arise after re-registering a car with Czech license plates?

After switching to Czech registration, car owners will have to fulfill the same requirements that apply to Czech citizens today. In particular, drivers need to:

- Pass the mandatory STK technical inspection;

- Maintain the car in proper technical condition;

- Obtain the necessary insurance;

- Pay the fees and taxes stipulated by law;

- Comply with the environmental standards established in the European Union.

For many Ukrainians, this will mean additional costs, but at the same time it will simplify the use of the car in the country on a long-term basis.

Which cars may encounter difficulties?

Czech authorities will pay special attention to the compliance of vehicles with EU technical and environmental standards.

During registration, they will check:

- Compliance of the car design with European standards;

- Emission level and environmental class;

- Serviceability of the main safety systems;

- Legality of the structural changes made.

Problems may arise for owners of cars that were imported from markets outside the European Union, in particular from the USA, Canada or Asian countries. Such vehicles often have different technical characteristics, lighting or safety systems that require additional adaptation.

Difficulties may also arise in the case of excessive tinting of the glass, uncertified changes to the suspension, exhaust system or other modifications that do not meet European requirements.

What should Ukrainian car owners do now?

Although mandatory registration will come into effect only from 2028, experts advise not to postpone preparations until the last moment, car owners should do the following in advance:

- Check the technical condition of the vehicle;

- Make sure that the car complies with EU environmental standards;

- Collect documents on the origin of the car;

- Clarify the requirements for a specific model in the local transport authorities of the Czech Republic.

This is especially important for owners of cars imported from countries outside the European Union, as their re-registration may require additional procedures and costs.

The Czech Republic is gradually moving from temporary solutions to long-term regulation of the stay of Ukrainians in the country. New rules for car registration are part of this process. For most vehicle owners, the changes will mean the need to go through standard procedures that have long been applied to local drivers.

Until 2028, Ukrainians have enough time to prepare their cars for the new requirements and avoid possible difficulties during registration.

News about changes in the rules for motorists in different countries once again reminds us of how important it is to monitor the documents related to the vehicle. In Ukraine, one of these mandatory documents is the MTPL policy.

A motor vehicle insurance policy protects the driver from significant financial costs in the event that he is the culprit of a road accident. The insurance company compensates the victims for losses within the established limits, which allows you to avoid a serious burden on the family budget. This is especially relevant in the context of the constant increase in the cost of car repairs and medical services. An electronic policy has the same legal force as a paper one, and you can apply for it remotely in a matter of minutes.

Reminder! From July 2026, all new cars sold in the EU must have a built-in interface for connecting an alcohol interlock. Read here how this system works, what other safety standards have become mandatory, and how this will affect drivers.
