In Ukraine, men over the age of 50 continue to be drafted during mobilization. There are many concerns and stereotypes surrounding this—people are accustomed to thinking that conscripts of this age are sent directly to combat units on the front lines. In reality, things are different.

Ilya Abel, an officer at the 1st Recruitment Center of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Ground Forces, explains in a comment to “RBC-Ukraine” that the army is in dire need of the life and professional experience of older men, so they try to assign them to rear-echelon and specialized positions.

Where can men over 50 serve in the army?

In today’s reality, age has long ceased to be the main factor. The defense forces need more than just stamina and good physical fitness. The army is critically short of people who know how to manage processes, handle paperwork, repair equipment, and organize supplies.

That is precisely why men between the ages of 45 and 60 are considered a valuable human resource. The main principle now is to assign a person to a position where their civilian experience and knowledge will be of maximum benefit, rather than simply filling a random vacancy.

Which branches of the military do men aged 50+ get assigned to during mobilization?

Most often, older mobilized men are assigned to three main areas where their skills are best utilized. We’ve streamlined the long lists of positions and grouped them by function:

▪️Logistics and Support. This is the army’s lifeblood. Older men excel at organizing supplies, tracking equipment, and coordinating supply chains. This can include both rank-and-file accounting specialists and logistics officers—those who ensure the reliability of the rear.

▪️Repair bases and technical services. If in civilian life you’ve worked with tools, operated heavy equipment, or had a knack for electronics, you’re very much needed in repair and recovery battalions. Mechanics, drivers, and communications specialists are always in demand. They maintain armored vehicles, repair artillery, and evacuate vehicles. Essentially, people do their usual jobs, but in a military setting.

▪️Staff work. Former executives, managers, and simply detail-oriented individuals often become staff officers or commanders’ assistants. Here, an analytical mindset, diligence, and experience with documentation are highly valued. Staff officers analyze the situation, maintain service logs, and coordinate communications between units.

How can you choose a position in the army yourself and avoid being assigned to a random unit?

Military experts emphasize one important point: the best opportunities open up for those who don’t wait for a random assignment but take the initiative.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine’s recruitment centers have officially designated a separate age category for candidates aged 45–60, which already indicates high demand. If a man applies there on his own, he receives a huge advantage—the opportunity to choose a position that aligns with his civilian profession.

Recruiters take your experience into account and match you with a suitable position, guiding you through every step of the enrollment process. This proactive approach is the best guarantee that an experienced auto mechanic or logistics specialist will be able to do what they do best, providing real value to the army.

Remember that volunteers from all over the world are joining the ranks of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. However, the process of enlisting in the Ukrainian Armed Forces requires going through a series of complex legal and immigration procedures. How can you legally enter the country during wartime? What documents are required by the military registration and enlistment office? How do you properly sign a contract?
