If an asylum seeker returns to Ukraine, he/she is considered to have voluntarily returned under the protection of the authorities of the country of origin, and from that moment on, the assistance provided by the Romanian state is terminated.
Is it possible to move freely within the country and the European Union while under temporary protection?
Yes, you can move freely within the country as well as the European Union for 90 days within a 180-day period. Keep in mind that you can only exercise the rights granted by temporary protection in the country that issued your residence permit. If you traveled to another EU member state, you will need to apply to the competent authorities in that country to exercise the above rights.

What is temporary protection and how to obtain it in Romania?
Temporary protection is a special legal status granted to persons who are forced to leave their country due to war or humanitarian crisis. In the EU, this status allows for legal residence, work, study, medical and social assistance.
In Romania, people from Ukraine can obtain temporary protection by applying to the Immigration Inspectorate (IGI) or the police working with foreigners. There, you will be issued a temporary protection certificate (Permis de protecție temporară ), a document that confirms your status and gives you access to a wide range of rights and services.

The following border crossing points are available to enter Romania from Ukraine: Halmeu, Sighetu Marmației, Siret, Isaccea. You can use Rădăuți Prut, Albita, Sculeni, Stânca, Galați checkpoints via Moldova. The waiting time at each checkpoint can be checked online on the websites of the Romanian and Ukrainian border services.

Do I have access to medical services in Romania?
Yes, persons from Ukraine who have been granted temporary protection are entitled to free medical care in public institutions under the same conditions as insured Romanian citizens. This includes consultations, treatment, emergency care, vaccinations, etc.
Can my children go to school in Romania?
Yes, children from Ukraine can study in Romanian schools for free, regardless of their status. They are offered Romanian language courses, as well as support for integration into the educational process.
Can I study in Romania?
Yes, you can. There are 45 schools, 10 lyceums, and 3 universities in Romania with Ukrainian language instruction. You can also continue your studies online through Ukrainian platforms. Universities can enroll students even without a full package of documents, assessing their knowledge.

Can I work in Romania?
Yes, you can. Ukrainians with temporary protection can work without a special permit. To be employed, you need to obtain an identification number (CNP) and open a bank account. If you do not have diplomas or certificates, you are allowed to submit a declaration of experience under your own responsibility.
Certain professions (doctors, architects, lawyers) require supporting documents. If necessary, you can contact the state employment agency.
Can I receive financial assistance?
Yes. Starting from July 1, 2024, persons with temporary protection can receive support for accommodation for up to 3 months:
• 750 RON/month for one person
• 2000 RON/month for a family
The application is submitted to local authorities upon arrival. Required documents: identity card, birth certificates of children (if any), proof of residence address.

Do I need to extend my temporary protection in Romania?
Currently, the status of temporary protection is automatically extended until March 4, 2026. If you are already registered, no additional actions are required for the extension.
Can I leave Romania with temporary protection?
Yes, you have the right to leave the territory of Romania. However, if you are absent for more than 90 days, your temporary protection status may be lost. Also, in other EU countries, your protection is not automatically valid - you need to apply again.
