Is it possible to cross the border without a biometric passport?
If you do not have a biometric passport, you cannot use the visa-free regime. In this case, you need to apply for a visa to enter Romania or take advantage of the possibility of obtaining temporary protection for Ukrainians under the special conditions introduced due to the war.
Please note: Ukrainians can travel abroad on the basis of an internal passport in cases where this is justified by circumstances, for example, if a person is traveling from an active combat zone, crossing the border as a refugee and has objective reasons for not being able to quickly renew or issue a foreign passport. In this case, this person may be allowed to cross the border on the basis of an internal passport as an exception.
In such situations, Ukrainian border guards check all the circumstances of the departure in detail and interact with representatives of the neighboring country to find out whether they will let a Ukrainian without a passport through. Such an exit is possible only as an exception and with the consent of both parties.
What should I do if my passport expires?
If your passport is about to expire, in order to travel to Romania, you need to extend it in advance at any State Migration Service of Ukraine or at a Ukrainian consulate abroad.
