S status in Switzerland: is it possible to change the country of protection and how to renounce the status
Refugees from Ukraine temporarily living in Switzerland must apply for S status. Over time, many Ukrainians want to return home or move to another country, so the question arises of changing temporary protection in Switzerland and renouncing special status. Learn how to do it
Switzerland continues to accept and support refugees from Ukraine. Persons who do not have the corresponding status in another EU or EFTA (European Free Trade Association) country can receive temporary protection in this country. However, there are exceptions. We will talk about them further.
You can get asylum in Switzerland and another European country at the same time, only if this country is heavily overloaded by the war in Ukraine. Such countries include, for example, Poland. Otherwise, the Ukrainian will be denied S status in Switzerland.
How to find out if the country is heavily overloaded with Ukrainian refugees?
Write a letter to [email protected] asking if your case is an exception. If you get a positive answer, you can expect to receive S status.
What does S status mean in Switzerland?
This status applies to persons seeking protection in Switzerland. It is valid for a year, but can be extended.
With this status, a Ukrainian can leave the territory of the country and return without processing additional documents. It also allows you to officially work or become self-employed.
To get S status, you need to apply in advance on the RegisterMe website and make an appointment for further registration. More details about the steps for registration at the link.
How to cancel S status?
• If you are leaving the country, you must submit a written application for refusal of temporary protection. Download the sample here.
• Send the completed and signed application to the Staatssekretariat für Migration SEM, Quellenweg 6, 3003 Bern-Wabern, including your N number.
