Unfortunately, no one is immune from an accident, as any road user can become the culprit of a road accident, either due to a vehicle malfunction or their own negligence. And while the procedure in the event of an accident in the country of permanent residence is quite clear to drivers, getting into an accident abroad can easily be confusing due to lack of knowledge of local rules and stress.

What to do in the event of an accident abroad and how to receive compensation is described below.

What documents do I need to have to get compensation in case of an accident?

You can get compensation after an accident abroad only if you have a pre-issued Green Card, which is mandatory for driving in 45 countries. See the full list of countries where the Green Card insurance policy is valid here. Remember that a Green Card insurance policy is mandatory for driving a car abroad!

You can apply for a Green Card car insurance policy for the required period on the Visit Ukraine website

Please note! The amount of damage coverage (for car repairs or treatment of victims) depends on the country in which the accident occurred. We told you more about the coverage of the Green Card earlier.

Procedure in case of an accident abroad

In the event of a traffic accident, the driver who is at fault for the accident should:

1. Record the scene of the accident in a photo or video (location of vehicles, damage to the car, etc.).

2. If necessary, call an ambulance and the police. If the damage to the cars is minimal and people are not injured, the participants in the accident can draw up a Europrotocol on their own.

3. Get a police report on the circumstances of the accident.

4. Provide other parties to the accident (victims) with a photocopy or a copy of the Green Card.

5. Within 15 days, notify your insurance company of the accident, using one of the methods specified in the Green Card.

If the culprit of the accident is another party to the road traffic accident, or if the accident involved citizens of different countries, you need to contact the National Bureau of the country where the accident occurred directly.

It should be noted that in each country that is a member of the International Green Card Motor Insurance System, the National Bureau is the only competent organization for all issues related to compensation for damage caused by a non-resident driver in the territory of such country.

We remind you! Obtaining compensation after an accident when the culprit does not have a motor third party liability insurance policy can be a difficult task, but there are certain steps that can help you get the money. Read more about the correct algorithm of actions in such a situation in our previous article.
