A new railway route will connect the capital of Ukraine with Bratislava in December 2024, which will significantly expand transport links between the countries. Find out about the features of the new route and the prospects for its development in the future
Slovakia has confirmed its readiness to launch a railway connection between Kyiv and Bratislava in mid-December. This became known during the sixth meeting of the Ukrainian-Slovak Mixed Commission, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine reports.
As a reminder, a new train between Ukraine and Poland will also start running in mid-December. In addition, the EU plans to connect Berlin and Kyiv by high-speed rail.
Features of the new route
The new rail route provides for a change of train at the Chop station. The route planning takes into account the construction of the Euro-gauge railway between Uzhhorod and Chop, as well as the future direct line Uzhhorod - Chop - Kosice - Bratislava. In the future, it is planned to expand the route to other European countries.

Modernization of border checkpoints
In addition, according to Yulia Svyrydenko, First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine, significant progress has already been made in modernizing the border infrastructure:
– The checkpoint “Uzhhorod - Vysne Nemecke” has been partially modernized
– New equipment has been installed
– Traffic lanes for transport have been expanded
– Expansion of the checkpoint for pedestrian crossing is planned
Ukraine is also interested in expanding the capacity of the Maly Berezny-Ubl'a checkpoint. The plans include opening the Pavlove-Matiovce railroad crossing point, which currently operates only as a freight crossing point, for passenger traffic.
The launch of a new railroad connection between Kyiv and Bratislava will be an important step in the development of transport infrastructure and strengthening economic cooperation between Ukraine and Slovakia. The modernization of border crossing points will increase the capacity of both freight and passenger transport, which will have a positive impact on the development of bilateral relations.
We remind you! The issue of opening airports for civilian flights continues to gain momentum in Ukraine. Earlier, the country presented a roadmap for launching flights. However, on November 7, a preliminary date was announced when airlines will be able to start operating.
