In 2026, the demand for rail transportation in Ukraine remains extremely high, especially in the summer season, holiday periods and weekends. Because of this, tickets for popular routes  in particular, Kyiv–Lviv, Kyiv–Odesa, Kyiv–Przemysl or Dnipro–Lviv  are often snapped up in the first hours after the sale opens.

At the same time, not all passengers know exactly how the Ukrzaliznytsia reservation system works, why seats can suddenly disappear or, conversely, reappear, and when the chances of buying a ticket are highest. In this material, we tell you when UZ ticket sales open in 2026, how seats are distributed between stations and what will help increase the chances of a successful purchase.

When does ticket sales start?

Domestic trains

Tickets for most trains with numbers 700+ (long-distance services within Ukraine) go on sale at 8:00 a.m. 20 days before departure. From this time, tickets become available in the Ukrzaliznytsia app, on the website booking.uz.gov.ua, and at station ticket offices.

Before the full-scale war, ticket sales for most flights opened 45 days before departure. However, due to the need to promptly adjust the schedules and take into account the security situation, Ukrzaliznytsia reduced the sales depth to 20 days. In 2026, this system continues to operate.

It is especially important to remember the opening time of sales in the summer season, because on popular routes a significant part of the seats can be sold out within the first few hours after the start of sales.

However, there are several important exceptions:

● For destinations in Pavlohrad, Kherson, Mykolaiv, and partially Kramatorsk, Sumy, and Chernihiv, sales start only 10 days before departure.

● The same rule applies to regional trains (electric trains and diesel trains numbered 800–899).

For example, if you are planning a trip from Kyiv to Lviv on July 15, 2026, tickets for this flight will go on sale on June 25 at 08:00.

If we are talking about destinations for which sales open 10 days in advance, such as Mykolaiv or Kherson, then tickets for the August 20 train will only become available on August 10 at 08:00.

Suburban trains

Tickets for suburban trains can be purchased exclusively on the day of departure and only at station ticket offices.

International connections

● Poland (Przemyśl, Chełm, Warsaw): ticket sales start at 9:00 a.m. 20 days before the date of travel.

● Moldova, Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary: tickets can be purchased from 8:00 a.m. 20 days before the date of travel.

For international flights, competition for tickets is traditionally even higher, especially for destinations to Poland. In the summer season, tickets for popular trains to Przemyśl or Warsaw are sometimes sold out less than an hour after the opening of sales.

For example, if a trip to Przemyśl is scheduled for August 10, 2026, tickets will be available for purchase from July 21 at 09:00.

How to buy UZ tickets for foreigners, as well as what determines the prices of train tickets — we explain here.

When do ticket sales close?

You can buy a ticket until the train leaves the station. This works both for buying a ticket at a station ticket office and online.

Why can tickets suddenly appear again?

Even if a train is marked as completely sold out, this does not mean that there are no more chances to buy a ticket. Some seats are regularly put back on sale after other passengers cancel their reservations.

In addition, Ukrzaliznytsia may add additional cars to popular routes in case of high demand. Most often, new seats appear a few days or even a few hours before the train departs.

Passengers are advised to periodically check the availability of tickets even after the route is completely sold out or use the automatic monitoring function in the UZ application.

How and when do new tickets and additional empty cars appear?

As explained by Ukrzaliznytsia in a commentary to Ekonomichna Pravda, ticket sales begin with the opening of one car of each type (SV, compartment, reserved seat). When there are fewer than four seats left in a particular type of car, Ukrzaliznytsia adds a new car of the same type. This is repeated until all seats are sold out.

This system allows for flexible response to passenger demand. During peak periods – summer, holidays or mass transportation – additional cars can be added even several times to one flight. That is why users are advised not to check the availability of seats only once, but to monitor the flight regularly.

Helpful tip!

Foreigners also need medical insurance to enter Ukraine, which covers treatment and assistance in emergencies, including war risks. This is not only a requirement but also a practical necessity for safe travel.

On some popular destinations, tickets can disappear literally within minutes after the start of sales. For example, flights from Kyiv to Odesa in the summer season are often sold out in less than an hour, and tickets for the international route Kyiv to Przemysl sometimes disappear within 15–45 minutes after the start of sales. Trains from Kyiv to Lviv usually remain available a little longer - on average 1–2 hours, while tickets for flights to Kherson or Mykolaiv can be sold out within a few hours after the start of sales 10 days before departure. That is why passengers are advised to log into the app or the Ukrzaliznytsia website a few minutes before the start of sales.

How are tickets distributed between stations or why are there no seats available?

Ukrainians often face the fact that there are no tickets, for example, from Kyiv to Lviv for the Kyiv-Premysl train, but you can buy a ticket for the same train to Przemyśl. As explained by UZ, this is due to the fact that each station along the train's route is allocated a certain number of seats for all categories of cars. However, priority is given to ticket sales from the initial to the final station, regardless of whether it is the first or other day of ticket sales. The only exception is the last day before the train departure. Thus, if there are still tickets left the day before departure, the norms are lifted and all seats become available for all stations on the route.

“In other words, if there are 20 tickets from Kyiv to Lviv and 100 tickets to Przemyśl, then there are 100 tickets available for any station along the route in a day,” explains EP.

This system ensures that passengers arriving from intermediate stations have the opportunity to purchase tickets, not just those traveling from the route's starting station. At the same time, passengers purchasing tickets for longer routes—for example, from Kyiv to the final station of an international route—are usually given priority.

How does ticket monitoring work at UZ?

The Ukrzaliznytsia mobile application has a ticket monitoring function. The user can set up notifications, and when tickets for the required direction appear, he or she will immediately receive a message. In addition, through monitoring, it is possible to automatically purchase a ticket as soon as it becomes available. To do this, you need to log in to the application through Diia.Signature and pay for the ticket (the funds are returned to the account if the required tickets do not appear or if the user cancels the monitoring). However, keep in mind that automatic redemption does not work for trains to Poland (except for Intercity+) and for the Kyiv - Vienna route, for these flights you can only receive a notification when a ticket is available.

In 2026, the Ukrzaliznytsia mobile app remains the most popular way to buy tickets. In addition, users note that during peak load times, the app often works faster and more stable than the website.

Tips to increase the chances of buying a ticket

1. Buy tickets immediately after the opening of sales (depending on the flight, this is 20-30 days before departure, at 08:00-09:00 am).

2. Use the monitoring function to receive notifications about new tickets and automatic purchases.

3. Check the availability of tickets the day before departure - the norms are removed.

4. If the desired flight is completely sold out - check the availability of seats again during the day, as some tickets are returned after cancellation of reservations.

5. For popular summer routes, it is worth logging into the application and adding a bank card in advance - this will help you make a purchase faster at the time of opening of sales.

6. If the Ukrzaliznytsia website is working slowly due to load, try to book a ticket via the mobile application.

In 2026, the ticket sales system of Ukrzaliznytsia remains dynamic: seat availability can change literally every minute depending on demand, ticket returns, or the addition of new cars. That is why passengers are advised to plan their trips in advance, use monitoring, and check flights again even after a message about the lack of seats appears.

Travel in the summer of 2026 is worth planning in advance - especially when it comes to popular railway destinations, where tickets can disappear in the first hours after the opening of sales. In order not to waste time searching for different services, train, bus and flight tickets can be purchased in one place through Visit Ukraine. The service helps you quickly find the desired route, check available options and organize a trip online even during periods of high demand. The platform also offers travel insurance, transfers and other services for travelers.

Choose a convenient route and book tickets online through Visit Ukraine in advance so as not to miss the desired flight.

Reminder! In the Ukrzaliznytsia app, tickets may disappear after leaving the payment page. Find out why bookings are only valid for 15 minutes, how the system works and how to avoid losing your seat.
