TOP 7 Christmas markets in Europe

Christmas and New Year are just around the corner, so it's time to think about how to spend these fabulous days in an interesting and tasty way. We have compiled a selection of European Christmas markets that have been identified as the best according to the influential travel resource European Best Destinations.

1. Budapest, Hungary (November 29 - January 1)

Christmas markets in Budapest are a gourmet paradise, so you will hardly be able to get away from here hungry. Cinnamon baked goods, sausages or goulash in bread, dodolle potato dumplings, langos or roasted chestnuts, and traditional mulled wine for the mood. The Advent Feast at the Basilica Christmas town on St. Stephen's Square, which celebrates its 12th anniversary this year, was recognized as the best among European ones. The program of the fair includes musical performances, a photo exhibition, an ice rink, a selfie machine and a light show, which will be projected onto the facade of the basilica every day at 4:30 pm to enchant visitors.

2. Basel, Switzerland (November 25 - December 23)

Basel is considered the most beautiful and most Christmas city in Switzerland, where themed fairs have been held for over 40 years. The warm Christmas light shines not only in the well-preserved Old Town, but also in the shops and facades of many buildings. This year, around 130 traders and artisans will be offering their wares for sale in small, rustic-style wooden chalets. Anyone still looking for gift ideas can find inspiration in the wide range and magical atmosphere.

3. Metz, France (November 19 - December 30)

For 10 years, the fair in the French city of Metz (Lorraine region) has been included in the list of the best Christmas markets in Europe and is considered by many to be the most beautiful in France. With unique activities that can only be seen in Metz at Christmas, such as the Lantern Trail, the Ferris wheel and the many chalets offering local produce and handmade gifts, Metz is truly unique. Here you can go ice skating on the icy road and then warm up with mulled wine or hot chocolate.

4. Craiova, Romania (November 26 - January 9)

Discover one of the most beautiful Christmas spots this winter and let yourself be carried away by the fabulous atmosphere of Craiova during Christmas time. In the historic center of Craiova, renovated in La Belle Epoque style, you will find handicrafts, artisans, concerts (opera, ballet, interactive shows) as well as creative workshops for children at the Santa Claus House. On Mihai Viteazul Square, opposite the Craiova Town Hall, you can go ice skating, taste Romanian delicacies and be enchanted by a splendid Christmas tree.

5. Trier, Germany (November 19 - December 22)

The fair in the city of Trier can be called the most romantic. Located in the medieval main market in front of the striking Trier Cathedral, there are 95 decorated cabins offering delicious food, souvenirs and entertainment for the whole family. In addition, the only queen of mulled wine in Germany, Sarah Schmitt, is looking forward to international guests in Trier.

6. Madeira, Portugal (December 1 - January 9)

The incredibly beautiful Portuguese island becomes even more amazing for the Christmas holidays. The fair presents a wide variety of products, including exotic flowers, traditional souvenirs and of course the typical delicacies and drinks of the season, providing fun in a very pleasant atmosphere. Guests can enjoy fun daily entertainment and shows such as Christmas carols and folklore performances, as well as fairytale fireworks.
