Ukrainians who are in Sweden under the Temporary Protection Directive must apply for an extension of their residence permit in advance in 2026. Submitting your application on time allows you to remain in the country without interruption, retain your right to work and continue to receive support.

Who should apply, when, and how the procedure works — we explain further in this article.

Who should apply for an extension of temporary protection in Sweden?

All persons who have received a residence permit under the Temporary Protection Directive must apply for an extension of temporary protection in Sweden if their permit expires in 2026. This rule applies to both adults and children, regardless of the length of their stay in the country or whether they have a personal number.

If the application is not submitted on time, the right to legally reside in Sweden will not be automatically extended, which may result in the loss of important rights.

Deadlines for applying for an extension of temporary protection in Sweden in 2026

The Swedish Migration Agency has set a specific period for submitting applications. In 2026, applications will be accepted from 28 January to 4 March.

Applications must be submitted within these deadlines, even if there is still time before the permit expires. Early or late applications may lead to complications in the procedure.

In our previous article, we discussed in detail the nuances of employment in Sweden.

How to apply for temporary protection extension through Migrationsverket?

Applications are submitted online through the Swedish Migration Agency's electronic service, Mina sidor. There are two ways to log in:

– via BankID;

– using a username and password.

After filling out the form, the system allows you to immediately select a time for a follow-up visit to the service centre. It is important to save the confirmation of submission and regularly check your messages in your electronic account.

What information is required to extend temporary protection in Sweden?

The extension procedure does not require the uploading of new documents. The main information you will need is your case number (ärendenummer).

This is required for each person separately and usually:

– starts with the digits 52;

– is indicated on your UT-kort residence permit card;

– may be found in previous letters from the Migration Agency or in your Mina sidor e-office.

No passport or other documents are attached to the application.

How to apply for temporary protection extension for the whole family?

There is a simplified application model for families. The whole family is included in one application, which avoids duplication of data and separate procedures.

One application can include:

– one applicant;

– two adults;

– up to 10 children under the age of 18.

After submitting the application, all family members must appear in person at Migrationsverket or a service centre to complete the mandatory procedures.

Visiting Migrationsverket after submitting the application: what do you need to know?

After submitting your application online, you must visit the Migration Agency in person. This is a mandatory step that cannot be skipped.

During the visit:

– a photograph will be taken;

– fingerprints will be taken;

– the identity of each family member will be confirmed.

The time of the visit is selected immediately when submitting the application via the electronic service.

What happens if you miss the deadline for applying for temporary protection?

Delaying the submission of your application can have serious consequences. If the application is submitted after the permit has expired, the procedure changes.

In this case:

– you will need to reapply for temporary protection;

– you will lose your right to work until you receive a new permit;

– you may lose access to certain types of social support, which you will have to reapply for.

That is why it is critically important to meet the deadlines.

Despite the relatively simple procedure, in practice, applicants often encounter difficulties, from finding a case number to questions about family applications or missed deadlines. In such situations, it is worth involving specialists.
