Car body: what do the letters on the registration certificate actually mean?
Car registration certificates often contain abbreviations that not all drivers understand. These abbreviations indicate the type of bodywork and are used during registration, insurance and other procedures related to the car. Find out more about how to correctly decipher these abbreviations and why they are necessary for car owners
When registering or re-registering a vehicle, the registration certificate records the make, year of manufacture and body type. As explained by the Main Service Centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, this information is entered in the form of special abbreviated codes, which often raise questions among drivers.
Why are these letters needed, where exactly to look for them in the documents, and how to correctly understand the body type designation — we will explain further in this article.
Where is the car body type indicated in the certificate?
In the vehicle registration certificate, the body type is indicated by a separate code in the corresponding column of the document. This entry allows you to clearly identify the design type of the car when entering data into the register, during inspections or when changing the owner.
The code uses letter abbreviations that correspond to the approved classification, which simplifies working with documents and standardises data for different types of vehicles.
In the previous article, we talked about mandatory technical inspection of vehicles in Ukraine.
How to read the letter codes in the vehicle registration certificate?
Body type abbreviations consist of two letters, and each combination is assigned to a specific form and purpose of the car. The decryption helps to understand which category the vehicle belongs to, even without a visual inspection.
Among the most common options that can be seen in the certificate are:
● AA — a classic passenger car with a closed body and a separate boot.
● AB — a compact version with rear doors that open together with the glass.
● AC — a car with increased luggage space that is part of the passenger compartment.
● AD — a two-door model with sporty body proportions.
● AE — a vehicle with an open or folding roof.
● BB — a car in which the driver's cab is structurally combined with the cargo area.
● SE — a trailer adapted for living and travelling on public roads.
These codes are used to clearly identify the design of a car in government databases.

Why does a driver need to know the type of car body?
The body type is important when:
● re-registering or selling a vehicle;
● making changes to registration data;
● purchasing insurance products;
● servicing and evaluating a vehicle.
An error or misunderstanding of this point can lead to unnecessary clarifications, delays or misunderstandings when working with documents.
All vehicle characteristics, including the body type, are entered into the register during the first registration or official changes. If the code in the documents raises questions or does not correspond to the actual design of the car, you should contact the MIA service centre to clarify the data.
Specialists will help you verify the information and, if necessary, correct the records in accordance with the actual condition of the vehicle.
