The arrest of Prince Andrew has become one of the most sensational events in the modern history of the British monarchy. The brother of King Charles III was detained as part of an investigation into possible abuse of office, and new details from documents in the Jeffrey Epstein case have only intensified public outrage. Find out what Prince Andrew is suspected of and how this case could affect the British monarchy
In the UK, King Charles III's younger brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was arrested. This is a first in modern British history: for the first time in decades, a member of the royal family's inner circle has been detained as part of a criminal investigation.
Andrew had previously been stripped of his military titles and royal patronages due to his ties to American financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Now the police suspect him of abuse of office.
Symbolically, the arrest took place on his 66th birthday. Andrew himself has repeatedly denied all allegations and insists that he has done nothing illegal.
Morning arrest at Sandringham Estate
On Thursday morning, photos appeared of cars arriving at the royal estate of Sandringham Palace in Norfolk, where the former prince currently resides.
In an official police statement, the name of the detainee is not mentioned, as is customary:
“As part of our investigation, we have today arrested a man in his 60s from Norfolk on suspicion of breach of trust and are conducting searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk. He is currently in custody.”
This is a complex offense — a breach of official duties by a person acting on behalf of the state or society. According to BBC legal correspondent Dominic Casciani, the essence of the accusation is that the official could have knowingly committed a serious violation, realizing its illegality.

Reaction from the king and the palace
According to BBC News, neither the king nor Buckingham Palace were notified of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's arrest.
Charles III expressed deep concern over the news of his younger brother's arrest. He stressed that a full, fair, and proper process would be conducted by the relevant authorities, adding that they had the full support and cooperation of the royal family.
“Let me be clear: justice must be done,” the king emphasized.
At the same time, Charles III noted that while the investigation is ongoing, it would be wrong to comment further. He also assured that the family continues to fulfill its duties and serve society.
According to the BBC, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, support the king's statement following Andrew's arrest.
An unprecedented case for the modern monarchy
The BBC's royal correspondent called the arrest of a former member of the royal family unprecedented in modern Britain.
At the same time, it is emphasized that the fact of the arrest is not proof of guilt, and no formal charges have been brought at this time.
It is unknown to which police station the detainee was taken. However, the very prospect of the monarch's brother being held in an ordinary police cell with ascetic conditions contrasts sharply with the luxury of Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle.
According to British criminal law expert Danny Shaw, the suspect can be held in custody for a maximum of 96 hours — but only with the approval of senior police officers and the magistrate's court. In most cases, detention lasts 12–24 hours, after which either charges are brought or the suspect is released pending further investigation.
The former prince, like any other suspect, will be held in a detention center cell with a bed and toilet — without any special conditions or privileges.
Connection to Epstein and new details
Files in the Epstein case released in the US confirm the financier's numerous contacts with members of the British royal family. The documents contain correspondence with “the Duke,” who, according to media reports and experts, has been identified as Prince Andrew.
The files contain photographs and letters that put the former prince and his family in an extremely awkward position. In particular, one of the photos allegedly shows Andrew in a compromising situation with a woman lying on the floor. The letters also discussed dinners at Buckingham Palace with a guarantee of complete privacy.
This week, police said they were investigating a complaint alleging that Andrew may have passed confidential material to Epstein, including reports on his own trips to Singapore, Hong Kong, and Vietnam, and details of potential investment opportunities.
After the documents were published, the anti-monarchist organization Republic asked the police to investigate possible signs of abuse of office and breach of state secrets.
Police representatives say the arrest opens up broader procedural possibilities — access to equipment, documents, and searches of all premises used or controlled by the suspect.
The investigation may cover not only Norfolk or Berkshire, but also other locations associated with the person involved in the case.
Prince Andrew's arrest has been a serious test for the British monarchy. Despite the high-profile allegations and public outcry, the key question remains open: will this case lead to formal charges and a trial, or will the allegations not be sufficiently substantiated during the investigation?
