Ukrainians traveling abroad via Poland mostly focus on Warsaw and Krakow. These two destinations have long been popular thanks to convenient transport links and a wide choice of flights. However, the Polish aviation network is much broader, and some less popular airports can offer more favorable conditions for flights. One such option is the airport in Poznań, which was previously written about by UNIAN.

How exactly can it become a convenient alternative for Ukrainian travelers, how much does the trip cost, and what flights are available — we will tell you more in this article.

Are you planning a trip from Ukraine to Europe or vice versa?

Visit Ukraine offers comfortable transfers from Ukraine to Europe and back. This is the best option for those who want to cross the border quickly, avoid unnecessary transfers, and get there without stress.

Flights from Poznan: Ryanair, Wizz Air, and other airlines

Poznan is attractive primarily because of the presence of two of Europe's largest low-cost airlines. Ryanair provides connections to more than a dozen European countries, including Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Great Britain, France, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Ireland, Belgium, Cyprus, Malta, Croatia, Montenegro, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Albania. The airline recently expanded its route network by adding Balkan resort destinations and flights to Jordan. Wizz Air, in turn, connects Poznań with Albania, the United Kingdom, Georgia, Montenegro, and Switzerland.

In addition to low-cost carriers, the airport serves regular flights by carriers such as KLM, Lufthansa, LOT Polish Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, and flydubai. During the season, charter flights are also operated from here by Enter Air, Neos, Pegasus Airlines, Smartwings, and Ukraine's SkyUp, which currently operates in European markets. This variety of carriers makes Poznań an interesting hub for those looking for the best combination of price and schedule convenience.

Why are tickets from Poznań cheaper than from Warsaw and Krakow?

Low-cost airlines are deliberately developing their route networks through regional airports, as airport charges and related costs are usually lower there than in capital city hubs. Poznań is a prime example of this strategy. Local authorities are interested in attracting budget carriers and are willing to invest in infrastructure and offer favorable conditions to airlines.

For passengers, this means more affordable ticket prices, especially during the active promotion of new destinations. An additional advantage is that the airport is less congested than Warsaw or Krakow. It is easier for airlines to obtain convenient departure and arrival slots, so flight schedules are often more convenient.

The difference in ticket prices for similar routes between Poznań and major airports can sometimes be quite significant, which compensates for the additional travel costs.

How to get to Poznan from Ukraine by train and bus?

Poznan is located closer to the German border, so at first glance it may seem too remote. However, transport links with cities where Ukrainians arrive are quite well established. A direct train from Przemyśl to Poznan takes just under 8 hours. The cost of tickets on the day of departure starts at 90 zlotys (approximately 1,091 hryvnia), but purchasing them 30 days before the trip allows you to reduce the price to 39 zlotys (approximately 473 hryvnia). The cheapest tickets from Kyiv to Przemyśl currently cost from 1,800 hryvnia, which means that with good planning, the entire journey from Kyiv to Poznań will cost approximately 2,300 hryvnia.

An alternative route runs through Warsaw. The train from Warsaw to Poznań takes 2.5 hours, and tickets purchased in advance cost from 19 PLN (about 230 UAH). You can get from Warsaw to Kyiv by bus, which is much cheaper than the train. In this case, the total cost of the Kyiv-Warsaw-Poznań route can be around 1,500 hryvnia. Another option is via Chełm, where trains run from Ukraine and tickets are easier to buy than for the Warsaw route. A direct train from Chełm to Poznań takes about 6 hours, with a transfer in Warsaw — about 7 hours, and the cheapest tickets start at 24 zlotys (291 hryvnia). For routes via Przemyśl and Chełm, it is worth considering a night transfer — this allows you to save on accommodation and not waste a day on the road.

Comparison of route costs: Poznan vs Krakow

The route “Kyiv — Przemyśl — Krakow” costs approximately 2,100 hryvnia under the most favorable conditions and takes about 5 hours less than a similar trip to Poznan. The difference in the cost of ground transportation between these two options is relatively small — about 200 hryvnia. Therefore, the key factor is the price of a ticket from the final airport.

Before buying, it is worth comparing the cost of a flight to your destination from both airports. Even a difference of 20-30 euros on a ticket can completely justify the extra time spent traveling to Poznan. This is especially true for budget travel, where every penny saved counts.

Poznań-Ławica Airport: history and interesting facts

The full name of the airport is Poznań-Ławica Henryk Wieniawski Airport. Founded in 1913 as a German military airbase, it is one of the oldest airports in Poland. The northern section was used for military purposes until December 2009, while the southern part serves civilian flights — international, domestic, and cargo. In 2012, a new terminal with a capacity of up to 3.5 million passengers per year was opened.

There is also an interesting feature: the flight path to the runway runs directly over the city, so there are periodic discussions about moving the airport to a new location. So far, the matter has not progressed beyond discussion. Another curiosity is that pilots sometimes confuse Poznań-Ławica with the neighboring Poznań-Krzeszyny airbase, as both runways are 2,500 meters long and located almost in a straight line.

How to get from the center of Poznań to the airport?

The airport is only 5 kilometers from the city center, so the transfer does not take much time. City buses No. 148 and No. 159 run between the airport and the central railway station every 15-30 minutes, including at night. The trip takes about 20 minutes. A 15-minute ticket costs PLN 5 (approximately UAH 61), and a 45-minute ticket costs PLN 7 (approximately UAH 85). It is worth choosing a 45-minute ticket, as the 15-minute limit may not be enough due to possible traffic jams.

A 45-minute ticket also allows you to change to a tram at the station and reach the historic center of Poznań in 10 minutes (on foot from the station, this walk takes about half an hour). If you have free time between trains and flights, you can pop into the large shopping center near the station or head to the old town. Among the interesting places to grab a bite to eat is the Kulinarna Kamienica food hall, which offers a wide selection of establishments to suit every taste and budget.
