In Kyiv, the speed limit on roads will not be raised to 80 km/h in 2026. Find out why this decision was made, what speed limit is currently in effect, and what this means for drivers
In 2026, Kyiv will not implement the traditional seasonal increase in the speed limit to 80 km/h on certain road sections. This decision was made following a comprehensive survey of the capital’s street and road network. This was announced by the Department of Transport Infrastructure of the Kyiv City State Administration.
Thus, the standard speed limit will remain in effect in the city during the spring and summer.
Why did Kyiv decide against raising the speed limit?
Experts conducted a detailed analysis of road conditions and traffic conditions on sections where speeds of up to 80 km/h were previously permitted. The survey took into account:
● the presence of public transit lanes;
● sections with left turns;
● areas with limited visibility;
● traffic accident statistics from the previous year;
● planned repair work;
● temporary traffic management schemes.
It is also noted that the decision was influenced by the effects of severe winter weather conditions, which deteriorated the condition of the road surface.

What speed limit will be in effect in 2026?
According to the city government’s decision, a standard speed limit of up to 50 km/h will be in effect in Kyiv from April 1 to November 1.
This means that no exceptions for specific sections, as was the case in previous years, will be applied.
The Department of Transport Infrastructure emphasizes that the safety of road users remains the top priority. The decision aims to reduce accident rates, improve safety for pedestrians and drivers, and adapt speed limits to the actual condition of the infrastructure.
Currently, municipal services are working to repair road surfaces and stabilize the city’s transportation system.
It is also worth remembering that different rules and requirements apply when traveling outside Ukraine. In particular, to drive abroad, you must have an international insurance certificate—the “Green Card.” You can obtain it in advance online via Visit Ukraine, which helps avoid delays at the border and ensures financial protection during your trip.
We remind you! A new penalty system for drivers is planned to be introduced in Ukraine. If a driver accumulates 15 points within a year, their driver’s license may be revoked. Read how the system will work and what you need to know.
