Memorial services, graves, or Radonitsa: what you absolutely must not do or bring to the cemetery

The spring memorial days, known as Radonitsa, Provody, or Hrobky, are a time for honoring the memory of the deceased. Unfortunately, many people mistakenly turn them into noisy feasts, violating church canons and rules of etiquette. Find out what is strictly forbidden to do and bring to the cemetery in 2026

The Bright Resurrection of Christ marks the beginning of a period of special remembrance for those who have passed into eternity. This cycle concludes with Radonitsa—a holiday that symbolizes the victory of life over death. During these days, the Church urges believers not to grieve, but to share in the joy of the great miracle of the Resurrection with their deceased loved ones.

The tradition of visiting cemeteries is accompanied by strict rules of etiquette and religious precepts. Observing them helps preserve the bright and spiritual atmosphere of the day, preventing the commemoration from turning into a pagan ritual or a secular party.

When will Radonitsa take place in 2026?

Radonitsa is traditionally celebrated on the ninth day after Easter, usually on a Tuesday. In 2026, the dates of remembrance depend on the denomination, though the essence remains the same:

▪️ April 7 — Day of Remembrance for Western Rite Christians (Easter was celebrated on April 5).

▪️ April 14 — Radonitsa for Orthodox and Greek Catholics (Easter fell on April 12).

At the same time, in many regions of Ukraine, tradition dictates its own rules: mass visits to cemeteries often begin in advance—as early as Sunday or Monday.

Graves or Radonitsa: Which Is Correct?

The word “Radonitsa” itself comes from the word “joy,” which once again emphasizes: this is not a day of mourning, but a celebration of faith that the souls of the departed have passed into eternal life.

In Ukraine, this day has many regional names:

▪️“Graves,” “Gravesites,” “Farewells”—these are the most common names for memorial days in the central and western regions.

▪️ Radonitsa—a term that has historically taken root in Polissya and is officially used in church terminology.

▪️ Memorial Monday — a tradition of the southern regions, where it is customary to visit the cemetery on the eighth day after Christ’s Resurrection.

Interestingly, the cult of honoring ancestors in the spring existed in our lands long before the baptism of Kievan Rus’. Pagans believed that the souls of the deceased could bless the family with a good harvest. With the arrival of Christianity, this ancient custom did not disappear but was harmoniously woven into the Easter calendar, taking on a new, bright meaning.

What is STRICTLY forbidden to do at the cemetery

Clergy strongly urge people to avoid superstitions and not turn a day of spiritual remembrance into an ordinary feast. Here are the main prohibitions to keep in mind:

No alcohol or tobacco. It is strictly forbidden to consume alcoholic beverages on cemetery grounds, and even more so—to pour vodka or wine onto a grave. The same applies to cigarettes: you must not smoke near gravestones or leave tobacco products with the deceased.

Avoid lavish feasts. The church does not approve of organizing picnics or large-scale meals right next to the graves. It is better to distribute the food you brought to children, the needy, or leave it as alms.

Do not forget to pray. A visit to the cemetery loses its Christian meaning without prayer. It is advisable to first visit the church, offer prayers for the repose of the soul, and only then go to the gravesites.

Avoid speaking ill of the deceased. During these days, it is forbidden to speak ill of the deceased. Recall only the bright moments. If you cannot find kind words, it is better to simply honor the person’s memory in silence.

Put off hard work. Although there is no strict canonical prohibition against working, it is strongly recommended to postpone laundry, cleaning, repairs, and heavy physical labor, dedicating this day to spiritual peace and the memory of loved ones.

Reminder! Ukrainian cuisine impresses with its regional diversity: from Transcarpathian cheeses and wines to Odessa seafood, Lviv coffee, and Podillia dishes prepared according to ancient recipes.
