Ukrainians and international transport operators can breathe a sigh of relief: the anticipated transport gridlock at the border with Poland during the peak holiday season is not expected to materialise. The planned suspension of passenger transport services has been cancelled.

Will the Shehyni border crossing be closed to buses?

Initially, the Polish side announced its intention to temporarily suspend the passage of passenger buses travelling from Ukraine to Poland from 15 June. The reason given for this move was the need to carry out scheduled maintenance work on the designated bus lane.

However, following prompt and successful negotiations between Ukraine’s Ministry of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure and Poland’s Ministry of the Interior, this decision was successfully postponed.

According to the agreements reached, bus services via the ‘Shehyni–Medyka’ border crossing point will not be suspended throughout the summer tourist season. It is important to note that transport will continue to pass through as normal even whilst repair works are being carried out on the Polish side.

What determines queues at the border with Poland today

Waiting times at the border vary. The workload at border crossings is heavily influenced by seasonality: in summer and on public holidays, the number of people wishing to leave the country rises sharply. Traditional peak times also fall on Fridays and Sundays.

It is also worth bearing in mind the method of crossing the border: pedestrians, cars and buses are processed at different speeds. At each border crossing point, separate queues form for different types of transport, so the situation can vary depending on the time of day.

How to travel to Europe without queues: alternative routes

To avoid wasting hours waiting, we recommend considering routes other than the Polish one. The borders with Slovakia, Hungary or Romania can be an excellent alternative to transiting through Poland, especially during periods of heavy traffic.

The main rule before travelling is to monitor queue conditions at the borders online. Flexibility in choosing your route and having an alternative border crossing will help you save a significant amount of time in the event of unexpected traffic jams on your main route.

Keep in mind: for trips abroad, in addition to registration documents, insurance remains mandatory. For example, to leave Ukraine by car, you need a “Green Card”—you can apply for it in advance online via Visit Ukraine to avoid problems when crossing the border.

Please note! From June, the rules for passing through checkpoints for car owners in Ukraine will change radically thanks to the expansion of the e-Queue system. Find out how to book a crossing time online and save yourself the stress.
