In the Lviv region, a large-scale renovation of a section of the M-09 international highway—which leads to the “Rava-Ruska–Hrebenne” border crossing on the border with Poland—has been completed. The road improvements are expected to enhance traffic safety, speed up freight transport, and make trips to the European Union more comfortable. Learn more about the work that has been completed, the importance of this route for travel to Poland, and the changes drivers will already notice
Ukraine continues to modernize its transportation infrastructure along the western corridor, which remains one of the most important routes for international traffic. One such project was the repair of a section of the M-09 Lviv–Rava-Ruska highway, which provides access to one of the busiest border crossing points on the Ukrainian-Polish border.
According to the Infrastructure Restoration and Development Service in Lviv Oblast, work on the project has already been completed. The upgraded road is expected to enhance traffic safety, improve logistics, and make trips to Poland more comfortable for both private drivers and international carriers.

International Highway M-09: Why This Road Is Important
The M-09 Lviv–Rava-Ruska highway is one of the key transportation routes between Ukraine and Poland. Thousands of drivers of passenger cars, buses, and trucks use it daily to reach the “Rava-Ruska–Hrebenne” border crossing.
The route is of strategic importance not only for international transport but also for tourism and business travel. Since the start of the full-scale war, traffic at western border crossings has increased significantly, making the modernization of access roads a top priority for road infrastructure development.
The route is particularly important for freight logistics. It carries routes connecting Ukrainian manufacturers with European Union markets, so the quality of the road surface directly affects the speed and safety of transport.

What work was carried out during the repairs?
The repairs covered a 33-kilometer section of the M-09 highway from the village of Volia-Vysotska to the “Rava-Ruska–Hrebenne” border crossing. The work was carried out as part of a joint Ukrainian-Polish infrastructure project funded with support from the European Union.
During the reconstruction, road workers completely renewed the pavement, reinforced the road base, and installed modern infrastructure to ensure safe traffic flow. Particular attention was paid to sections that had long been in need of major repairs.
Among the main works completed:
- A new asphalt concrete pavement was laid;
- Bridges and engineering structures were reconstructed and repaired;
- Sidewalks and a bike path were installed on certain sections;
- New street lighting was installed;
- Road markings and signs were updated;
- Public transportation stops were built;
- Guardrails were installed to improve traffic safety.
As a result, the road has become more comfortable for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. The upgraded infrastructure also meets modern European requirements for international transportation corridors.

How will the road upgrades affect travel to Poland?
The completion of the repairs is expected to have a positive impact on both international freight transport and travel for ordinary travelers. High-quality pavement reduces travel time, minimizes wear and tear on vehicles, and improves safety along the route.
The road upgrade is particularly important for those who regularly cross the Ukrainian-Polish border via the “Rava-Ruska–Hrebenne” border crossing. This route remains one of the most popular among tourists, migrant workers, students, and international carriers.
Key benefits of the road modernization include:
- A more comfortable and safer journey to the border;
- Reduced risk of vehicle damage due to poor road conditions;
- Improved transportation links between Ukraine and Poland;
- Increased traffic capacity along the route;
- Development of border communities and local businesses.
Upgrading the transportation infrastructure is also an important step toward Ukraine’s further integration into the European transportation network and the development of international mobility.
