The ability to drive a car saved thousands of Ukrainians who were able to reach safe cities by their own transport. Many refugees ended up in neighboring Poland, which can be reached relatively quickly. In the first months of the war, our fellow citizens could easily use a Ukrainian driver's license and drive a car with Ukrainian license plates. However, we will tell you what rules have changed in 2023.

Using a car with Ukrainian registration in Poland

Many Ukrainians are interested in whether it is allowed to drive cars with Ukrainian license plates in Poland - Poland has extended such permission until December 31, 2023.

That is, all citizens who entered the territory of Poland by car with Ukrainian state registration number plates and have a vehicle registration certificate issued in Ukraine can freely move around the country until the end of 2023 without leaving the territory of Ukraine.

This applies to all citizens of Ukraine who are legally staying in the territory of the Republic of Poland, including those who stayed until February 24, 2022.

The corresponding decision was put into effect by amendments to the "Law on assistance to citizens of Ukraine in connection with the armed conflict on the territory of this state", adopted in January of this year.

What to do if the driver's license has expired?

You can use a Ukrainian driver's license in Poland even if it has expired. A special law allows Ukrainians to drive a car with expired licenses until December 31, 2023. This decision applies to all Ukrainians who legally arrived in Poland after February 24, 2022.

Do Ukrainians need to exchange driving licenses in Poland?

Refugees from Ukraine who plan to stay in Poland for a long time or stay in the country without obtaining temporary protection status must exchange their Ukrainian identity card for a Polish one.

How to do it?

Contact the district office or city hall. The communication department of the city administration (Wydział Komunikacji Urzędu miasta) or Starostwo Powiatowe (Starostwo Powiatowe) also deals with issues of replacement of driver's licenses.

Before applying, prepare the following documents:

• Passport or other document that legalizes stay in Poland;

• PESEL UKR;

• the original and a copy of the Ukrainian driver's license, as well as its translation;

• photo 3.5x4.5 cm, taken no later than 6 months ago;

• confirmation of payment of the fee in the amount of PLN 100.50.

Peculiarities of driving in Poland

In Ukraine, most drivers install video recorders in their cars. However, in Europe their use is regulated, and in some countries it is prohibited. In Poland, these devices are legal, but there are certain requirements that must be followed:

• use the video recording for your own purposes;

• the recording can be evidence of violation of traffic rules. To use it, you need to send the recording to the police;

• it can also be proof of your innocence in the event of an accident.

Importantly! Remember to protect personal data. In Europe, it is illegal to share personal information without a person's consent, so be careful when using a DVR.

It is also important to take care of your own safety in advance. We advise you to take out a "Green Card" insurance policy before entering another country, or if you are already abroad, on your own car. By purchasing insurance, you will receive property damage compensation and many other benefits. Learn more about the "Green Card" and buy insurance in a few clicks at the link.

Is it possible to transfer a vehicle registration certificate of my own car to another person?

Recently, a new function appeared in the "Diia" application, which allows the driver to transfer the right to drive the car to another person. In just a few clicks, you can "share" a vehicle registration certificate of your car with a person who is even abroad.

We will remind you! We previously wrote that the procedure for registration and re-registration of vehicles in service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will change in Ukraine from December 14, 2022. Details here.
