Austria is preparing for a major overhaul of its system of fines for traffic violations. The new rates are set to take effect in 2027 and become part of the two-year national budget. This was reported by the Austrian publication krone.at.

The official rationale is not so much to boost the budget as it is to improve road safety. “Speeding, unfortunately, is still considered a minor offense,” noted Transport Minister Peter Hanke. The number of traffic accidents increased in 2025, and speeding has become one of the key causes of this trend.

However, there is also a financial aspect: the government expects to generate an additional 80 million euros per year thanks to the increased fines—provided, of course, that they prove effective enough as a deterrent.

Speeding: New Minimum and Maximum Fines

The most notable change is the increase in the minimum fine for exceeding the speed limit by 30 km/h: previously it was 150 euros, now it will be no less than 200 euros—a one-third increase.

The maximum fine remains unchanged at 5,000 euros.

For serious violations—speeding by 40 km/h in built-up areas or by 50 km/h outside them—the range of fines changes from 300–5,000 euros to 400–6,000 euros.

Complete table of new standardized fines

In addition to revising speeding fines, Austria is standardizing penalties across all federal states. Previously, fine amounts could vary by region.

Speeding by 50 km/h in built-up areas:

● up to 10 km/h — 60 euros;

● 10 to 15 km/h — 80 euros;

● 15 to 20 km/h — 105 euros.

Speeding by 100 km/h on open roads:

● up to 10 km/h — 50 euros;

● 10 to 20 km/h — 80 euros;

● 20 to 25 km/h — 95 euros;

● 25 to 30 km/h — 120 euros.

Other violations:

● crossing a solid line — 95 euros (previously 70 euros);

● failing to yield at a crosswalk — 85 euros (a uniform standard nationwide);

● ignoring a “No Entry” sign — 110 euros;

● Illegal use of a bike lane — 80 euros;

● Parking or stopping in violation of road markings — 60 euros (previously 30–48 euros depending on the state).

Fines for illegal parking are one of the most significant changes regarding standardization. Until recently, they varied significantly between states: in Lower Austria and Vienna — 30 euros, in other regions of Vienna — 48 euros. Starting in 2027, a uniform rate of 60 euros will apply nationwide.

What won’t change?

Despite the large-scale revision of fines, penalties for driving under the influence will remain unchanged. The Ministry of Transport confirmed this in response to a request from krone.at. Penalties for drunk driving and potential license suspension remain as before.
