The Back-on-Track organization has created an interactive map of Europe’s night trains for 2026, covering all regular routes across the continent. This was reported by Euronews.

The map is designed in the style of a transit map and allows users to quickly navigate the available night train connections. The Back-on-Track website also features a detailed database with comprehensive information on each route and practical tips for booking tickets.

Why are night trains gaining popularity?

Night trains are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to travel among Europeans. There are several reasons: the consequences of the military conflict in the Middle East have created certain problems with air travel, and travelers’ environmental awareness continues to grow. Night trains have an obvious practical advantage: passengers can combine travel with sleep without wasting daytime hours on the road.

Five new routes in 2026

The Back-on-Track map highlights five new night train routes launched in 2026:

● the European Sleeper route from Paris to Berlin;

● two new PKP routes connecting Poland with Prague and Munich;

● the planned Brussels–Milan service.

The Brussels–Milan line is of particular interest to experts. “The new Brussels–Milan line will fill a gap, but the route through Switzerland will pose a serious operational challenge. We are very curious to see if it will work out," comments Giovanni Antoniazzi, spatial data specialist and deputy head of Back-on-Track.

Ten Canceled Lines and Shortened Routes

At the same time, 2026 also brought losses: 10 night routes have disappeared from the map. Among them are several popular ÖBB Nightjet routes and the legendary 1,456-kilometer Stockholm–Narvik line, which was one of the longest night train routes in Europe.

Some routes have been shortened: specifically, the ÖBB service that previously started in Bratislava and ran to Split now departs only from Vienna.

The main problem for night trains is a lack of investment in rolling stock

Back-on-Track Chairman Juri Mayer speaks candidly about the industry’s systemic problem.

“The biggest obstacle for night trains in Europe and the main reason the train to Narvik was canceled is the lack of investment in rolling stock.

There is demand, and competition with air travel is no longer as fierce. There are concepts that allow for transporting up to 750 passengers in sleeper cars on a single train, which would make operations profitable on many routes. But to unlock this potential, we need significant investment—right now,", he emphasizes.

The second systemic issue remains the large-scale track repairs taking place across Europe, which regularly disrupt night train schedules. However, the situation is expected to improve: by 2032, new infrastructure is expected to provide a qualitatively different level of rail service across the continent.
